Hi,
I%26#39;m visiting California with some friends for a holiday this summer. We%26#39;re planning on doing 2 days in Yosemite (driving in from San Fran) then driving a full day to get to Las Vegas. Which route would be the best route to take? I know the Tioga pass could be closed at this time (we%26#39;ll be there in Yosemite on 27th-28th September). So I%26#39;ve got a couple of questions:
1. Which would be the best/quickest route from Yosemite to Las Vegas?
2. How long is this drive likely to take? I%26#39;m a little worried that we can%26#39;t do it in one day. We have 2 drivers at least so can share the drive.
3. I know there ain%26#39;t much there (!?) but would it be worth stopping in Death Valley for 1 night? Would prefer to get straight to Vegas but....
Thanks for any help or advice!
Bratty.
Yosemite to Las Vegas
Tioga Pass will not be closed at that time. It is still very warm in CA during September. I%26#39;ve been to Yosemite at the end of Sept many times and it can get down right hot during the day. Cools off at night. Actually in all liklihood it will be ideal weather at that time.
The drive is about 9.5 hours going over Tioga Pass. I can%26#39;t determine if this is too long for you.
Yosemite to Las Vegas
From Yosemite, take Tioga Pass over to 395 and then south. Death Valley at this time of year is not the spectacular wildflowered vista that it is in the spring. It%26#39;s HOT. I would drive through DV without plans to spend much time here.
9 hours from the Valley is pretty much on target.
Another route would be to drive through Yosemite, exiting the south, head through Fresno, bakersfield and on over to Las Vegas. This route has more divided highways, faster average speed, takes about the same amount of time but lacks much by way of scenic value.
Have fun, however you get there!
Hi Bratty - you have got a long drive from Yosemite to Vegas and 9hrs is probably the worst time. We made Yosemite to Death Valley (Stovepipe Wells) in 4.5 hrs ish but had very clear roads.
We enjoyed our stop in DV and whilst it is very surreal at Stovepipe Wells it will be hot but why not break the journey so you can say you stopped there. We made Vegas in 2hrs 5 mins from DV but it was early morning and trying to get our flight so I would suggest you allow 3 hrs to be safe!
Have a great time.
