We were there last week and went down as south as Carmel by the sea and the water was still cold.

This is the Pacific Ocean, for starters. And you%26#39;re in Northern California. You%26#39;d have to go down to Santa Barbara and southward for it to feel any warmer, and then not as warm as the Atlantic. If you%26#39;re not due to visit Southern California, I%26#39;d try Santa Cruz beaches -- Twin Lakes, the Boardwalk, Rio del Mar for instance. We%26#39;ve had a cold summer, too. You could always rent a wet suit!
