Hello!
I have been reading this discussion board and reviews of many, many hotels, but I%26#39;d like a few biased opinions on some of my options in hotels. Thanks in advance for your advice!
My husband and I will be traveling to SF for Christmas (and our anniversary). I am looking for a luxury, preferably boutique hotel that is not stuffy. I%26#39;d like to have luxury amenities (ie, DVD or VCR player in room, plush robes, great bed) as this is a special occasion for us. We don%26#39;t plan to rent a car and will use public transport and taxis. I have narrowed my choices to:
- Hotel Monaco
- Hotel Vitale
- Orchard Hotel
- Campton Place
- Hotel Drisco
- Hotel Majestic
Luxury boutique SF hotels for ChristmasI am usually partial to Joie de Vivre Hotels, and I especially like Hotel Vitale (even though it is a bit expensive). But since you are coming for Christmas, I think it would be most enjoyable to stay closer to Union Square with all the stores being dressed up for the holidays and such. This would narrow your choice to be between Campton or Monaco.
While Vitale and Drisco are wonderful hotels, they are a bit away from the major sights (although Vitale is right across from the Ferry Building). And I%26#39;m not sure if Vitale really fits the bill for being romantic...it has great amenities but the rooms are of a more modern decor, which can feel more ';cool%26#39;, as opposed to that warm, romantic feel.
If you are looking for a bit of a sanctuary within the city, then certainly the Majestic and Drisco would fit the bill.
Luxury boutique SF hotels for ChristmasThanks for the info - that was very helpful. What about the Orchard Hotel? It gets great reviews and sounds great?
I agree with Krslong. Union Square is your best bet. Campton or Monaco would be my choice.
I must be missing something with the Orchard. I don%26#39;t get why they are so highly rated. It%26#39;s nice and all, but I just don%26#39;t get it.
The Orchard looks great too, and it%26#39;s also close to Union Square. I didn%26#39;t leave it out for any particular reason.
I don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;ve considered it, but I adore The Prescott. Some say it%26#39;s seen better days, but they%26#39;ve always been great when I%26#39;ve gone... PERFECT place to stay around Christmas!
From your choices, I would say Campton Place.
Joie de Vivre has a nice hotel (Hotel Vitale), but I have enjoyed staying at the Orchard. I have always enjoyed using their DVD system with surround sound and enjoy the free DVDs offered at their front desk, great robes (I recently stayed there and they have upgraded their robes to an even better one). I don%26#39;t care much about their restaurant for their free breakfast because I dine either at Dottie%26#39;s Blue Cafe or Lefty O%26#39; Douls for breakfast. The room is comfortable. I like the rooms on the Bush St. side. Hotel Majestic has seen its better days, just like the Prescott and most of the Joie De Vivre Hotels, which I would even touch with a ten-foot pole (see the Cathedral Hill hotel reviews).
If you were to add another hotel to that list, please consider the Chancellor.
Hey Fernando....
If you%26#39;re going to slam a hotel chain, you should get your information straight.....Cathedral Hill is not a part of Joie de Vivre Hospitality. While certain hotels run by Joie de Vivre, like the Phoenix and Hotel Rex, are on the lower end of the ';boutique'; spectrum, others like the White Swan Inn, Hotel Drisco, Petite Auberge, and the new Vitale are excellent hotels.
I choose to stay at a Kimpton or Joie de Vivre hotel over others because I have always gotten consistently good service from these smaller chains. My rooms at the Joie de Vivre hotels, in particular, have always been immaculately clean and extraordinarily comfortable and I guess that is why I am so loyal.
The Cathedral Hill Hotel is part of the Joie de Vive Hotels. If you look on the website under ';Hotels'; it lists them under the heading ';affiliated hotels'; I think, I don%26#39;t know, they are basically running the hotel for the hospital that adjoins and owns it until such time as they convert as part of the hospital expansion.
Thanks for pointing that out Wes....I stand corrected. I%26#39;m not sure what ';affiliated'; means when it comes to determining the extent that Joie de Vivre is involved with running those particular hotels, but it doesn%26#39;t sound like Cathedral Hill is representative of the quality of the majority of their ';main'; hotels.
