alcatraz evening tour with kids?

We%26#39;d like to do the evening tour with our kids ( 6 yr old boy and 8 yr old girl) . My 6 yr old is not scared of anything, but 8 yr old can be a little frightened. Is the evening tour scary? Or just spooky for the adults. Will it go over their heads or do you think it might be too frightening.?

The audio tour is less scary for kids than it was a few years ago--fewer machine gun noises, etc. Much of the audio tour has commentary from former inmates. There are violent situations that are described.

My kids don%26#39;t scare easily, but I can tell you they were a little bored with the tour--they are 9 and 10 and this is the first time we took them to the Alcatraz tour. They thought seeing the cells was sort of interesting, but the information on the audio tour wasn%26#39;t especially interesting to them. The tour discussed several ';famous'; inmates but those names (e.g., Al Capone and the prohibition-era gangsters) didn%26#39;t mean anything to them. Both of my kids said the tour was ';okay'; but they wouldn%26#39;t want to go back.

I also think 6 might be a little too young regardless of whether your child is or isn%26#39;t scared easily. I read a guidebook on SF with Kids several years ago and that writer suggested that 9 would be a minimum age for kids to begin to appreciate the Alcatraz tour. Hope that helps!

Not scary at all. Some of the rides at disneyland are more frightening.

This is a great tour - better than the day trips. Get your tix in advance as they usually sell out.

Thanks to you both...I%26#39;ve decided to do it as I missed out last time we were in San Fran (10 yrs ago on honeymoon!) I don%26#39;t think it will be that exciting for the kids, but the whole rest of the holiday is geared towards their entertainment - Disneyland etc... they will just have to put up with it I guess. I think they will be intersted, but it will probably be a bit long. I will post in October when we return to let you know what we thought.
