Where is the best place to stay to be closest to the bars...

Hi everyone. My boyfriend and I are planning a long weekend in San Francisco in October. Where would the best place to stay if we wanted to be in the main entertainment district? I%26#39;d like to be close to the bars, restaurants and clubs. I%26#39;ve just started researching so any suggestions or advice you could give me would be really appreciated!
