Petite Auberge Hotel-SF

I%26#39;m planning a trip t oSan Fransisco and was wondering about the Petite Auberge bed and breakfast? Also, any tips on what to do and what is close to Petite Auberge would be great. We would like to eat at some great restaurants but have no idea where to do in that area. Just any information you could give me would be excellent!

Thank you

Petite Auberge is a great, old hotel. We stayed there on our wedding night almost 20 years ago, and went back again last year. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, the hotel is quaint and a little bit funky (you%26#39;ll love -- or hate -- the tiny elevator with the old-style accordion gate across it), and the location is convenient, tho not much happening on their block. Walking distance to Union Square area, although you%26#39;ll have one steep hill to climb to get back. From Union Square you can pretty much get anywhere in the City you want via the F-line trolley cars, BART, cable cars or buses. Taxis are convenient here, too, and generally cost less than $10 to most places from Union Square.

If you walk up the hill on Mason, you can hang a right and go have a drink at the Top of the Mark hotel nearby for a great view of the entire Bay Area, and then walk across the street for another at the Tonga Room in the Farimont, which%26#39;ll give you a hoot. If you really like to walk, you can wander all the way down Mason and, eventually, you%26#39;ll come to Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf. If you take a few right hand turns on the way, you can swing through Chinatown and North Beach as well. If you can stand the hills, its the best way to see the City. It may be a steep climb for a couple blocks up the hill, but once you%26#39;ve reached the Top of the Mark its all downhill from there.

Lots of great restaurants in SF -- check out the Chronicle reviews on sfgate.com (including their search engine and their Top 100 list), or the messageboard on chowhounds.com for great recommendations.

petite auberge was our honeymoon hotel 20 years ago also...it set the bar to which we judge all other quaint inns all over the world! the location is great for walking and catching the trolley...can%26#39;t name any nearby restaurants cause we love the morning breakfasts and we linger over the afternoon tea and hors devours....however, we have gone back every other year since our wedding and the last time noticed a difference in decor and hospitality...seems like the post family was selling the inn and we have not been back since the takeover. hopefully, they have not changed the recipes etc... would love to hear from someone who has been there since the new management.....

I stayed at the Petite earlier this month and, as it was the first time for me, have nothing to compare the experience with, but it was absolutely wonderful. The staff is very nice, the hotel d锟斤拷cor cozy, the fireplace rooms extremely comfortable and the breakfasts above and beyond any other complimentary hotel breakfast I%26#39;ve ever had.

The location is very close to Union Square and all its dining and shopping offerings. Plus, the city is so compact that you can walk/cable car/bus/cab pretty much anywhere else with ease.

As for restaurants, there are just so many amazing ones that we didn锟斤拷锟絫 get to go to even half of those on our list, and we stayed there a whole week! San Francisco is an amazing city for dining out and your options are almost unlimited, so what sorts of dining experiences are you most interested in?

I definitely want to try a great Chinese Restaurant--we love Chinese food and try something new, possibly Mediterranean or Indian. My husband is very conservative when it comes to dining out so we%26#39;ll probably by-pass the more trendy places and stick to the cozy comfortable restaurants (boo hoo). Any suggestions for good Chinese or something that we%26#39;ll never find elsewhere. I%26#39;m sorry that I can%26#39;t give you a better idea of what I%26#39;m looking for...I really don%26#39;t know what to expect when we get to San Fransisco. This is our first visit.
