There is a post called ';One Thing'; by ARBUCKEYE. Search for that and check it out. It has tons of suggestions. You can pack quite a bit into a couple of days, depending on your preferences and what you want to see.

Definitely take a cable car ride. A city tour may also be to your liking if you want to see a lot of attractions in one day...

Yes, you can walk across the GGB and I thought it was a great experience. However I did not walk across the whole bridge, heights make me a bit nervous. About 15 minutes on the bridge was enough for me to get great views and photos. If you have a car there is a parking lot across the bridge (away from SF), so you can walk half way and then back to the car. I don%26#39;t know about public transit to GGB. A few sights we enjoy showing visitors are Lombard street, China town, Pacific Bell Ball Park, Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf. There are several museums and lots of shopping, depends what you are interested in. September usually has nice weather!

Start the morning with early breakfast at the Ferry Building; catch the ferry to Sausalito; then walk across the Bay Bridge. Catch a bus to Fisherman Wharf and take a mid afternoon tour to Alcatraz. Come back and visit Fisherman Wharf and Pier 39 seeing the sea lions. Return to the hotel, take a quick 15 minute nap, and get ready for dinner. Do a little bit of shopping first around Union Square Enjoy dinner around 8:00 at one of the top San Francisco restaurants such as Gary Denko, Foreign Cinema, or other. Be sure to make reservations in advance. Enjoy a night cap drink back around Union Square and catch some sleep.

Day two - get up and do a little shopping till noon; then have dim sum in China town; go see the Fortune Cookie Factory; go to Golden Gate Park or the de Young museum; then catch happy hour at the Fairmont Hotel (Tonga room); go see Beach Blanket Babylon; and have a late night snack in North Beach. Enjoy a night cap at a local place near Union Square.

And alter this itineray any way you want to include your wishes! Enjoy!

I meant Golden gate bridge not Bay bridge...oops...

I have done several %26#39;2 day getaways%26#39; to San Fran. We stayed at the Pickwick in Union Square which is great for walking through the shopping area, Chinatown, little Italy and then down to the waterfront. Have lunch at those great cafes in little Italy. On this walk, you see the Coit Tower, the views on the walk are breathtaking. You can walk all the way to underneath the Golden Gate Bridge! Take the cable car back into town for dinner, on day 2 you can do the SFMOMA, check on line what is new, take the tram car to the Castro district, lunch there is terrific! we also made it to the Haight Ashbury area then to the park before grabbing a bus back to the hotel and alas our flight home!

thanks everyone the suggestions are really helpful! anymore tho are always welcome!
