backpacking Yosemite in March

any suggestions about backpacking yosemite in march?

backpacking Yosemite in March

Well, I notice no one%26#39;s answered you yet... the problem is, I don%26#39;t know anyone who has done it in March. Most of the backcountry routes are in the high country, where it%26#39;s still winter in March. I have some friends who have taken a cross-country ski tour from Badger Pass to Glacier Point, where I beleive they stayed overnight. There are some overnight huts up in the high country for skiers and snowshoers to use, although I don%26#39;t know many details (I assume you can find out more at the yosemite website.)

So, sorry not to be of more help. Maybe with this bumped up, someone else can give you more advice.

There are cross country ski tours out of Lee Vining up the Tioga Road . Check out www.tiogapassresort.com WINTER webpages.

Otherwise, unless you are an expert at snow camping, then I would say, you are out of luck. The avalanche danger is considerable throughout the backcountry well into late spring, even early summer, and storms are likely any time still in March.

The ski tours along the Glacier Point Road to the overnight shelter in the NPS building at Glacier Point would be splendid . Also if you are competent cross country skier consider Ostrander Lake Hut from Badger Pass, but there is a joke review here on TA hotels reviews so no luxury there, just sublime location for the bold, hardy and strong!

The trek to Dewey Point from Old Badger Pass is a great day trip on cross country skis or snow shoes.

Why don%26#39;t you contact backcountry office at the park for the best information?

Juday- I had a feeling you%26#39;d come through on this one...

Hi Macjack

Too many years have passed since those great winter outings! Just remembered that the stone ranger building near the entrance to Tuolumne Meadows campground is used as shelter in winter for cross country ski people. Seem to remember seeing info on that in the winter backcountry monthly bulletin from the two rangers who live up there and report back with pictures that make me green with envy when it is a clear, crisp Sierra winter day... but not when the blizzard is a-blowing! Brrrr.
