I%26#39;m going to San Francisco in November with my boyfriend for our anniversary. We%26#39;re staying at Hotel Vitale (Embarcadero area I believe) and I have our day trips pretty much figured out.
One night I would like to go out on the town with him, but don%26#39;t want to go somewhere that%26#39;s necessarily ';clubby.'; Just somewhere to get a drink that%26#39;s fun and upbeat. (for example, don%26#39;t want to be standing in line with a red velvet rope, paying $20 to get in.) Don%26#39;t mind pricey drinks, just don%26#39;t want to spend an hour trying to get in somewhere just to find a singles scene.
Any other dining suggestions are welcome too.
Thanks mucho!

Try Dinner at the Tonga Room at the Fairmont hotel.
It may seem a little %26#39;clubby%26#39; but they usually have a good mix of people and music. I think there might be a cover charge for the bar but not for Dinner.
The Tonga Room is decorated in a Polynesian style with Thatched Roofs etc. and a band that floats out in the %26#39;Lagoon%26#39; on a raft. It%26#39;s alot of fun!
Any other cool clubs/bars in San Fran that we must go to????
The Tonga room works if you are 60. Otherwise I would not recommend it unless you want a stuffy tiki bar atmosphere with tourists galore.
Can you give me an idea of what you like? Trendy? Upscale? Authentic Irish? Wine Bar? Good views? Quiet?
Also, will you have a car or mind paying $5-10 for a cab?
There are something like 1000 bars in SF, so it is hard to recommend something without further guidance as to your age and preferences.
Off the top of my head, it sounds like the Redwood Room is the right place for you. Think trendy west hollywood sunset strip or paramount hotel NY but with no lines. Drinks are pricey @ $10+
Another possibility is the bar at the Slanted Door in the Ferry Bldg which is walking distance for you. Same deal, but not quite as classy.
Finally you might consider the XYZ Bar at the W Hotel on 3rd, which is also walkable. This gets packed late at night - could be a wait after 10pm. Very loud, very hip, very young.
If you want something quiet, intimate low key then let me know as these places are not!
%26gt; Try Dinner at the Tonga Room at the Fairmont hotel.
Never, since the inception of the Tonga Room in the %26#39;40s or so, have I heard anyone recommend eating there. Oh, people do, of course; we would dream of sending anyone there to eat.
We frequent it to dance, that%26#39;s all.
%26gt; Off the top of my head, it sounds like the Redwood Room is the right place for you.
It would have been before the new owners trashed the place and trendified it. We don%26#39;t go there no more. It was, for many decades, absolutely wonderful in every respect including its outstanding kitchen. The Clift was consistently ranked among the planet%26#39;s top ten hotels. It was fequented by well-known entertainers, politicians, and others who wanted a little peace and quiet. It%26#39;s now contaminated by Yuppie scum. I don%26#39;t know who stays there these days.
On the same block as your hotel is Shanghai 1930. The food%26#39;s OK but I wouldn%26#39;t recommend it. Jazz most nights.
Much about our night life can be found on the SPECIAL MUSIC and DANCE EVENTS in San Francisco and environs page

There you will not find ';trendy'; or ';velvet ropes'; nor even outrageously priced drinks or unreasonable cover charges. You will find the best, i.e., where we go. If your taste is as ours, you won%26#39;t be disappointed.
I would highly recommend the starlight room at the top of the Sir Francis Drake hotel. You should call and make a reservation though. http://www.harrydenton.com/
There%26#39;s also the ';View'; at the top of the Marriott.
Both of these places offer desserts (Starlight%26#39;s are better than the View%26#39;s) and drinks, wiht the starlight having live music and the View piped music. The View is more of a bar/lounge, whereas the Starlight room is a bar/club.
There%26#39;s also the Top of the Mark, which may also have live music, and is a fantastic place. I%26#39;m not sure if they take reservations. They have FANTASTIC appetizers and desserts.
Google these places and have a great time choosing.
They are all generally close to Union Square, about 1/2 mile from the Embarcadero.
