Going from Salem Or. to Tucson in May. Is a one day trip from Reno to Vegas with a stop by Death Valley realistic? Or would it be better to add a night somewhere near DV?
realistic death valley visit?
If you just want to drive....and not stop anywhere (Mono Lake, June Lake Loop, Mammoth Lakes, Death Valley)....is doable in a day.
If you plan to see some of the sights, I%26#39;d plan on one overnight either in Lone Pine (you can then drive through Death Valley and onto Las Vegas the next day) or stay in Death Valley.

If you are driving from Reno to Lone Pine, that is a 4 1/2 hour non-stop down Hwy 395. Staying in Death Valley, if you can get accommodations, would probably work out well.
Lone Pine to Furnace Creek is about 100 miles - another 1 1/2 to two hours.
Thanks to both for advice. Now we%26#39;re definately thinking of spending the night around death valley (hope that%26#39;s not an omen!). Anyone know anything about Amargosa Valley Hotel?
