I want to thank everyone for all the great help given in helping to plan our trip to S.F. in mid October.
Reading the Forum daily has answered a thousand questions that we had.
Where is the best place to get Clam Chowder in a bread bowl ?
Thanks again.
Clam chowder in a bread bowl.
People will have their ';favorities';.
Mine is Boudin Bakery at Fisherman Wharf....
The reason: Best Sourdough Bread......and good chowder.
You can also watch the bakers as they make the bread....
Good location.
Enjoy!

Mini%26#39;s suggestion is a solid one. You can certainly find clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl in a lot of places. But the new Boudin bakery in Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf provides context and atmosphere that is unrivalled. Boudin itself is a very old San Francisco bakery, but they put a little 21st century showmanship into the new digs.
Boudin is without a doubt the place you want. There are also locations downtown at 2nd and Market if you don%26#39;t want to go to the wharf.
But if you want great chowder at an authentic place try Swann Oyster Depot on Polk Street. Family owned, family operated, great seafood, better value than FW.
