We will be in LA from May 1st-3rd, and are looking for a hotel that is reasonably priced (around 100-125 cnd), would like a pool, and prefer a hotel that has a resturant on property, or else ones that are within walking distance. Would also like to have activities near by (ie: beach, or the Zoo/ sea world), airport shuttle is a big thing, and we are flexible as to activities if we can get an airport shuttle. There are sooo many hotels out there and we are having problems narrowing it down, as we aren;t sure which are good and which to stay away from
LA hotelFirst please clarify what you want to see.
From your response, you would like to see the Zoo and SeaWorld.
Is this the San Diego or Los Angeles zoo?
Assuming its the San Diego Zoo, you really want to stay in San Diego to see the zoo and Seaworld. San Diego also ha a wonderful beach area.....So just want to clarify which area you plan to go to.
LA hotelEither zoo I guess, never knew there were 2. We are really overwhelmed by the mass of information. We are students, and will be doing a 3 day stop over on our way to Malaysia, so we are trying to find activities that are cheap, and also finding a hotel that is decently priced and is in a good location (safe). We are wanting a hotel with a pool as we don;t plan on going out at night (seeing as we are too young for the clubs). We have also tossed around the idea of staying near a beach and going jet-skiing. It would probably help if we knew what we wanted to do, but seeing we are wanting to keep things as cheap its hard to figure out what we are going to do.
You are flying into where on your way to Malaysia, Los Angeles? If so, then San Diego is not something for you to consider given your age, budget and time constraints. Sea World is in San Diego, and there is a famous zoo there, as well. Note that San Diego is over a hundred miles away from Los Angeles.
The beach hotels are probably out of your budget, but do a search herem for Santa Monica hotels and you might find something that is close to the beach and airport (and shopping and restaurants within walking distance), but not close to the zoo:

Ok, let me see if I can simplify this a little for you. Since you only have 2 days and you won%26#39;t have a car you want to be in a place that%26#39;s convenient to where you want to go. Ok, here goes:
LAX is close to a few beach communities which have hotels that are easy to get to (free shuttles). All of these have restaurants nearby or in the hotels.. The downside? The beach areas are no where near the Zoo which is on the other side of the city and only about half of the beach hotels have pools (since the ocean is right there to swim in). (You could go to the zoo by bus but it would take about 2 hours and you%26#39;d have to take 3 different buses)
So, let%26#39;s look at the beach options, first. The most economical hotel with everything you are looking for is the Sea View Inn at the Beach which is in the city of Manhattan Beach which is 11 minutes south of LAX. Although they don%26#39;t have a free shuttle, you can either take a cab for about $12-$15 or take the local bus which will cost $2.50 (actually, you%26#39;ll have to take 2 buses -- one, south on Sepulveda Bl to the corner of Rosecrans (about 7 minutes) and then one west on Rosecrans to Highland Ave (about 4 minutes) . The hotel is 3 blocks to the beach, has a heated pool, free internet access and free beach umbrellas and other gear (to borrow). Here is a link to the ratings for this hotel:

The room rate for the dates you want is $115 per night so you might take the savings (compared to your $125 maximum) and take a cab to and from the airport.
Manhattan Beach is a really cool, southern california beach community. There are lots of places to eat in all price ranges and plenty of beach to enjoy.
NOW, your other option is to stay closer to the Zoo (Which, of course, means farther from the beach). I recommend Hollywood and, specifically, the Hollywood Orchid Suites. The rate for the ';Junior'; which has 2 double beds and a kitchenette is only $89.
The little kitchen is handy because you can eat your breakfast in the room as well as some snacks and save money.
You will have to take a shuttle to the hotel from the airport ($15 each) but once you arrive, you will be in the center of Hollywood with piles to do and metro rail and buses to lots of places (including a 4-minute metrorail ride that will take you to Universal Studios). BTW, since the shuttle will cost a total of $30 for the two of you, you might want to take a cab. It will cost about the same and will be a lot faster (since you don%26#39;t have to pick up and drop off other people -- let alone, wait for the shuttle to show up).
You will be steps to tons of restaurants, shops, clubs and movie theatres (including the historic Chinese Theatre). Although you will be about an hour from the beach, you%26#39;ll be a lot closer to the zoo (probably about an hour, still). Maybe you%26#39;ll meet some other people staying at the hotel who have a car and you can get a lift to the zoo (about 30 minutes).

Good luck!
I am visiting LA 3/2 - 3/6. I am overwhelmed with all the possible activities. I have to hotel options Ramada Inn near Universal or LA Downtown Marriott. From my understanding Downtown LA is not all that, but at the same time the location is better than Ramada. Please let me know your views.
FYI - I am orginally from Ft. Lauderdale, FL so I not one for visiting the beaches.
We sorta found a neat hotel, what is teh Queen Marry like ( i think thats what its called....the boat) I think we are totally scraping the zoo idea as its going to be too hard to get too. So now we are on to planning a beach stay. What is Rendondo beach like?
Famurn:
The first question is: Will you be renting a car? The downtown area, Universal and the Hollywood area are connected by the redline metrorail (subway) so if you are not driving, any of these areas are convenient to getting to the others. The downtown Marriott is a luxury hotel. The ramada is a mid-quality one. Downtown has a fair amount to see and do on foot whereas the Universal area has only Universal -- there is no where to walk.
Lots of tourists select Hollywood as their hotel area since it is in the middle of the aforementioned 3 locations.
Here%26#39;s a link to Hollywood hotels.

Another popular location to stay is in Santa Monica (at the beach) but since you are not interested in the beach -- and it is so far from most other attractions, you%26#39;d be better off staying ';in town';.
Take a look at the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Los Angeles to get an overview about the city. This topic is the second topic in the L.A. forum topic list. Good luck.
Howch664, the Queen Mary is truly the former crusie ship but it is Long Beach Ca -- far from Los Angeles. Redondo Beach is an ok beach area but Manhattan Beach -- which I talked about in my former response to you -- is closer to the airport (and the rest of Los Angeles) and just as nice as Redondo.
