There are several extended stay hotels in San Jose.

Downtown area is quite safe, in my opinion. Was with a work group dining downtown tonight and a member of our team said he was walking home from the restaurant. He lives outside the downtown area, but he clearly was not worried and he is not a big guy.

I%26#39;ll look around for some ideas, but in the meantime, you might even check craigslist.org to see if there is anything in the temporary/sublet category.
