We are traveling with a one year old to LA and since we%26#39;ve heard from many people with kids to wait till she%26#39;s at least 3 or 4 before taking her to Disneyland we are not planning to take our daughter there this trip. I was, however, wondering what there is to do at downtown Disney? We are trying to find ';fun'; places for our daughter besides the beaches. Is Downtown Disney something a one year old would enjoy? We are going to Laguna Beach for a day, so was wondering how far the drive is from Laguna to Downtown Disney and if its worth it.
THANKS!
Downtown Disney?
Do you mean the Disney Concert Hall downtown? Unless I%26#39;m misunderstanding you, the Disney that is in downtown LA is the Concert Hall that is the home of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, not a branch of the amusement park. Photos can be found here: http://www.musiccenter.org/wdch/
Downtown Disney?
Hi theartgirl,
I%26#39;m sorry if I wasn%26#39;t very clear. I am not really sure WHAT I am talking about I am afraid. :) Someone mentioned on a previous post that you don%26#39;t have to go to Disneyland per se, but can go check out downtown Disney and there is lots to do there. I was wondering about what there is to do there and if its something a one year old would enjoy. Thanks!
Ah, I found the post that I think you%26#39;re referring to. Mini got that wrong - the downtown Disney is the Disney Concert Hall, and as I mentioned, is for concerts and is the home of the LA Philharmonic. It%26#39;s a wonderful venue for music, but not appropriate for babies/toddlers.
thank you so much theart girl! Saves us the drive :)
Downtown Disney is by Disneyland.....
In terms of a 1 year old....its a fun place to walk. There are restaurants (Rain Forest is uaully fun for kids); there is also beignets you can order by The Jazz Kitchen Restaurant. There are stores - fun to look at. If you get the right location, you can see the fireworks at Disneyland at night. (We often go there to see the fireworks...many do the same thing.).
Its also fun to go the Grand Californian Hotel - it has an access off of Downtown Disney. The lobby is quite nice (especially at Christmas when they have a really tall tree there....then it is almost an absolute must.). There is the Storyteller Cafe also at this hotel which has a character breakfast in the morning. There are various fun things to see along the walk including sometimes birds; tvs showing sport shows at ESPN, etc. If you have the time Downtown Disney is fun to go to and a relatively easy drive from Laguna (about a half hour). A one year old would probably like all the colors and lights of Downtown Disney.....as they get to be 4 or 5 years old, they tend to like the area even more. There is also a movie theater here (note: nice theater but the prices for snacks are a bit high.)
I read the other post and there is a Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles.
At age 1 that is not worth going to...I think that is what she is talkig about.
Downtown Disney however is quite fun....
and the 2 of you will have fun and the one year old would find it enjoyable. You can park free for a couple of hours and if you eat there (get a parking validation) I think parking is free up to 5 hours. Its been about 5 months since I visited so someone may know if this is still the case...
Have fun on your trip.

theartgirl: Hope you%26#39;re having a good day.
Please note ther is a difference between Downtown Disney and Walt Disney Music Hall.
They are in 2 completely different locations.
Downtown Disney is by Disneyland/California Adventure and is one of the main fun things people like to do at night. People go there even if they%26#39;re not going to Disneyland or California Adventure as its a fun thing to do.
The Walt Disney Music Hall is in downtown LA and although they offer tours of the place during the day, its mostly for concerts, etc. Its a great place to see a concert (we were there on New Years....). You probably were confused on the downtown word as it is in downtown Los Angeles. Downtown Disney however is in Anaheim.
Have a great day!
Personally, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend taking a one year old to a shopping mall. If it%26#39;s something you want to do, and there%26#39;s something specific you want to buy, that%26#39;s different. If it%26#39;s for your child, then listen to your friends and wait until she%26#39;s about 4, and then you can experience all of Disneyland.
