I%26#39;m travelling to San Francisco in August with my 2 teenage daughters (13 and 15) and need somewhere budget priced for 3 nights. We want to be close to eateries (not just burgers but not posh restaurants either), where we can walk back safely afterwards, and ideally within walking distance of all the usual sites - we were looking at Union Square area as a base but they%26#39;re all a bit pricey. We found the Grant hotel, seems in the right kind of location, but one of the reviews said it%26#39;s next door to a male strip club - we%26#39;re all pretty liberal but we want to be safe! Does anyone have any advice or other suggestions? We prefer to be in the %26#39;real%26#39; city, not the tourist areas.

The Castle Inn in Russian Hill would probably be to your liking.

thanks for this! The Castle Inn does indeed look perfect for us. Interestingly, booking direct with the hotel is 拢100 (that%26#39;s about $175) cheaper for our 3 nights than booking via Expedia or sim - which took it beyond our budget. So thank you!
While the Grant is next to a male strip club, the neighborhood is very safe in my opinion. To me, its the walk up Powell Street to Bush that would get old if I was walking back and forth a lot.
There are other budget hotels that are in flat, good areas such as:
The Baldwin
The Powell
The Stratford
Hotel des Arts
The Grant is an excellent location with easy walking to Union Square or through Chinatown to North Beach.
Although my first choice for location would be the Powell, the Grant would suit me, and probably you, quite well.
Someone recently commented that there was a porn shop within two blocks of another hotel neglecting to state that there are two churches and a cathedral within a block of the same hotel.
Male strip clubs are likely to be patronized by males who have no interest in you or your daughters. Were it a female strip club, you might have some, but quite little, cause for concern.
I stayed at the Grant a few years ago -- would never repeat that experience. Try one of the other suggestions.
