Car Hire from SFO

We are arriving in SFO on 14th November 2006 and are planning a 12 day road trip prior to staying 4 nights in San Francisco.

I am looking for advice on the best rental companies from SFO. I am probably looking for a Mid size SUV as we are planning to head up through Bishop to Lake Tahoe and i believe i woulsd need an SUV at this time of year due to the weather conditions.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

A little confused....

You can drive from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe in about 4-5 hours (given reasonable traffic conditions). Bishop is 3 hours south of Tahoe and not the normal route to get to Lake Tahoe. Are you flying into LAX instead?

Driving from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe mid November may or may not require chains.....(usually you can get by without them on most days unless we get a heavy snow fall.)

Is still ok to rent a Mid Size SUV - Avis, Hertz, Dollar, Budget...and it depends upon which one gives you the best deal. Any of the 4 however should have reasonable mid size SUVS.

Tell us more about what you are trying to see in the Sierras so we can help you with the routing. Bishop just sounds a bit off ....

Mammoth is an hour north of Bishop? Are you planning to go there?

Thanks for the reply mini. Our road trip starts at SFO and then we are heading to Monterey for 2 nights, then down the coast to San Luis Opisbo for a night. Following that we are heading to Los Angeles for 3 nights before heading to Las Vegas for 4 nights.

Following Las Vegas i was planning of heading up to Lake Tahoe, and by looking at the maps i had, Bishop seemed like a good mid way point stop on the journey there. I have not booked any accomodation for this leg of the trip so any suggestion for my route from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe would be appreciated. And although i hire a SUV will i still be required to carry snow chains in Novemebr?

Many Thanks

Steven

Whenever I need to rent a car at SFO I always go for Alamo. I usually book it through the German tour operator TUI as they offer the best all inclusive prices. If you book it by the end of March you are even entitled to a further discount.
