Universal studios back lot tour questions

Okay I have heard that with admission you get a tour of something. I have heard also that you need to do that first, as soon as you get in the gates. Can someone tell me a little more about what that is and how to get there from the front gates?

Universal studios back lot tour questions

It is the studio back lot tour. You get a map when you enter US. Just follow the map and the posted directions in the park. The back lot tour is a tram ride that takes you through some of the sets that have been used and are being used for TV %26amp; movies. You will also go through some sound stages and will see how they do some movie effects. My family found it to be fun and entertaining.

It%26#39;s exactly what the previous post mentioned. We were just there this past January and there was actually a film shoot taking place when we toured the backlot. The more recent addition to the back lot tour is a set from the War of the Worlds movie which was quite impressive.

Thanks for the info, I%26#39;m checking out the link right now!

One more thing. Check the Universal website. Right now you can pay for one day and get the rest of the year free. Might not do you any good as you%26#39;re from out of state but if you get there late in the day you can still go in and get a few of the attractions done then come back the next morning and finish it off.

Universal Studios

I will be at Universal Studios on Sunday April 2. Is this a busy day?? Would you recommend getting a Front Line Pass??? Is it work paying $149 for the VIP tour?? Is there any way we can get cheaper VIP passes or Front line passes??

Thanks

Universal Studios

In the LA Sunday Times, coupon section they have been running $15 off of Front of the Line tickets and Adult pay children%26#39;s price specials.

Universal Studios

I don%26#39;t think it should be too bad yet. Mid-April might be busier. We went on a Saturday in January and although there are crowds we were able to see and do most of the attractions.

  • Sunday brunch suggestions

Wife and I will be staying at the Coast Hotel for Saturday and Sunday nights prior to a 4-day cruise starting Monday 02/27. The plan for Sunday is to drive up to Malibu and then over to Hollywood for sightseeing.

Would like recommendations for Sunday brunch either in Long Beach itself or along our intended route. Saw where someone had mentioned a Sunday brunch at The Reef, near the Coast Hotel. Any comments on that or other options very much appreciated.

    Sunday brunch suggestions

Sunday brunch on Queen Mary is always fun give your location.

or perhaps drive to Malibu and enjoy Sunday brunch at Geofrey%26#39;s.

    universal studios tickets

Is there any price differential in buying tickets on arrival or before we travel to LA?

I brought up ticket deals on the net which finish on March 31st. We%26#39;re a party of 3 wanting to go on Monday 3rd April.

    Suggestions please.

    universal studios tickets

I%26#39;ve sent a couple of coupon vouchers-which expires in April, to a family in Australia. If I get some more of these, I%26#39;ll send them to you.

    universal studios tickets

Universal is offering a price of $46 ($10 off the regular price) if you buy the tickets through their website:

    鈥niversalstudios.com/webstore/鈥?/a>

Buying in advance will save you the inconvenience of having to wait to buy your tickets at the Universal Studios box office. Discount coupons (which are very rare for Universal) provide an additonal discount of about $10. Universal does not offer the $10 discount at their box office.

If it were me, I wouldn%26#39;t spend a lot of time trying to save any more money at Universal. It%26#39;s your vacation. You%26#39;re spending 1000s of dollars on it. Why worry about the $10 you COULD HAVE saved?

  • Beverly Garlands...

Anyone know anything about this hotel? Taking daughter to LA for a few days this summer. We would like to go to Universal Studios, Hollywood, and hopefully see some celebrities.

Any info on where to stay would be appreciated. I have already look at the most asked questions, however, I still find the search overwhelming. There are so many hotels and areas to choice from.

    Some info on us:

    Mother(37) and daughter(16)

    not into the party scene

    quiet hotels are perfect

we will not be renting a car

    easy transportation is a must

We would like to go to:

    Universal Studios

    Farmers Market

    Hollywood

    Rodeo Drive

A bus tour of Celebrity homes, LA, Beverly Hills, etc.

Any help on hotels would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Beverly Garlands...

You gave us all the necessary info, except budget :)

We always recommend the Renaissance in Hollywood (across from the Hollywood and Highlands Complex, your daughter will love it), the Orchid Suites, and Magic Castle. There%26#39;s also the Farmers Daughter which is located directly across the street from the Farmers Market/Grove. And many people like the Beverly Hilton because of its price and its proximity to Rodeo Drive.

    Beverly Garlands...

Beverly Garlands is in the San Fernando Valley -- a sprawling northern suburb. While it is still relatively close to Los Angeles, without a car it%26#39;s going to be inconvenient to stay there. Stay in Hollywood (as the previous poster recommended). The Renaissance Hollywood is a 5-star hotel (pricey but worth it, if you can afford it). They have a package available only from their website that includes breakfast and admission to Universal (at a discount compared to all of these things purchased separately). The link is:

    www.renaissancehollywood.com/packages.asp

(Click on 1-night or 2-night package).

For less expensive accommodations, look at the Magic Castle Hotel or the super-thrifty Orchid Suites. The latter is a super-popular place converted from an old apartment building. Each unit has its own kitchen (convenient for eating breakfast or occassional snacks).

All three of these hotels are within walking distance to the intersection of Hollywood Bl %26amp; Highland Av. At this intersection, you will find:

    1. the Hollywood Walk of Fame -- radiating out in two directions.

    2. the Chinese Theatre (1/2 block west on Hollywood Bl)

    3. Adjacent to the Chinese Theatre are the offices and depot for Starline tours -- one of L.A.%26#39;s largest coach tour companies (go to:

starlinetours.com and click on ';Hollywood'; in the left column). Their 1,4 and 8-hour bus tours take you to every major area of the city including driving by the homes of the ';stars';).,

    4. The redline metrorail train (underground -- access is from the northwest corner escalator) which will take you in one direction to downtown Los Angeles or in the other direction, one stop (4 minutes) to the Universal Studios stop.

    5. From the northwest corner of this intersection are busees that will take you to all of Los Angeles. For the Farmer%26#39;s Mkt and Grove, take the 217 or the 717 and in less than 20 minutes, you%26#39;ll be at the corner of Fairfax and 3rd -- in front of the Farmer%26#39;s Market).

To get to Rodeo Drive, walk to the northeast corner of 3rd St and Fairfax (where the bus dropped you off but on the opposite corner) and take the #16 to the corner of Santa Monica Bl and Canon Drive (10 minutes) and walk 2 more blocks to Rodeo Drive and turn left.

Go to mta.net for bus and metrorail info.

    Good luck!

    Hollywood Celebrity Hotel

Hi any comments on this hotel?? Please list several other hotels in the area that is below $100.

What city should I visit? Help!

Hello - planning a trip to Cali in early May for a long weekend with three other females (late 20%26#39;s/early 30%26#39;s). We have no idea what city we should visit...looking for a mix of day time activity plus nightlife. Please advise!

What city should I visit? Help!

    Possible:

San Francisco with a day trip to Napa or Sonoma for Wine Tasting and Spas!

    West Hollywood/Santa Monica

    San Diego/Gaslamp District for Evening

Weather in San Diego can be delightful in May!

What city should I visit? Help!

Since your time is very limited and it%26#39;s a long flight to the West Coast, you may want to concentrate on areas that are very close to major CA airports that you can get non-stop flights to from NY. That way you won%26#39;t be spending a huge hunk of your vacation time just trying to get to your ultimate destination. With all the constant changes the airlines are making in flight schedules and cities served, this may narrow it down quite a bit. Certainly, Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) are the most obvious choices, but you can research what other flights there are out of JFK or Newark. In early May, No. Calif. can still be kind of cool, overcast and possibly rainy, so if you%26#39;re looking to get away from the cold and wet, So. Calif. may be the best location. San Diego, La Jolla, Laguna Beach are all great spots that have beaches, shops/galleries, walking/biking, and nite life. If you had a little more time, I%26#39;d recommend Santa Barbara.

Disneyland or Downtown Disney Restaurant/ESPN Zone?

I need to make reservations for several restaurants since I am going during spring break which will be crowded. Any recommended restaurants would be great. I have reservations at Rainforest, Storyteller and Goofy%26#39;s Kitchen. I am looking for places for dinner and was thinking of ESPN Zone but wasn%26#39;t sure it is geared towards just a bunch on sports games on a big screen TVs. Wanted something interesting for my two kids to enjoy ages 13 and 6. Appreciate any advise. THANKS!

Disneyland or Downtown Disney Restaurant/ESPN Zone?

I enjoy the ESPN ZOne (Yes, I am a sports fan), but a group of friends, some who are not sports fans, went recently, and everyone enjoyed their meal, most of the time, the sound level is low (except for major chanmpionships), and the food is really good (basic american fare).

Upstairs is an interactive game area with lots of games that are sports related, a good chance to let the kids blow off some steam.

You can go to their website

    www.espnzone.com

to see the full menu, plus sign up for the free MVP club, which will give you priority seating.

And here is a good source of the area%26#39;s menus in general

    www.dlresortinfo.com

Disneyland or Downtown Disney Restaurant/ESPN Zone?

ESPN zone is fun. It does have sports on TV, but also on the second floor they have a lot of fun arcade and interactive games (mostly sports theme) to have fun at. Given your children%26#39;s ages, I%26#39;d say they would have a good time. It will be busy - so agree with your plan about getting resrevations in advance. (Note: Goofy%26#39;s - your 6 year old will like; your 13 year old might not so taking them to ESPN will be nice to do for dinner on the same day so they both have something to look forward to.)

Storyteller%26#39;s Cafe is fun, the buffet is pretty good, too! Have you considered Blue Bayou at the Pirate%26#39;s of the Caribbean? We had a water table here in Nov. and it was really fun, food is average, but better than most places in the park! Have fun! :)

The Blue Bayou will be closed from March 6th thru June 24th to allow changes to Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

  • Santa Barbara to Las Vegas

We will be travelling from Santa Barbara to Las Vegas on a Monday in May. How long will it take and what is the quickest route.

    Santa Barbara to Las Vegas

According to my road atlas it%26#39;s 367 miles from Santa Barbara to Las Vegas. It%26#39;ll probably take 5-7 hours driving time depending on traffic. Looking at my atlas it looks like you should go south on Hwy 101 to Ventura and take 126 east to US 5. GO south on 5 to Hwy 14 east (about 10 mi). Take 14 east to Palmdale. From Palmdale take 138/18 east to Apple Valley. Then take Hwy 15 north into Vegas. All in all it%26#39;s a pretty boring drive.

    Santa Barbara to Las Vegas

A much easier drive is actually the one that everyone tries to avoid.

But, we live in SB and head to Vegas about every other month and find the 5 route much longer than this one:

101 South to LA, 134 to the 210 to the 15, then take the 15 all the way into Nevada.

On a Monday, you should have a great drive, if you leave at either 5 a.m. or ealier or 9:00 a.m. or later from SB.

We%26#39;ve never had a problem as long as we factor in avoiding the LA traffic.

The only time I wouldn%26#39;t take this route is on a Friday-Sunday, though we come back on Sunday often and its not that bad in the earlier afternoon.

    Have fun!

Thanks for your help. We have an atlas but nothing beats local knowlege. I think we will go for the after 9:00am start. I am not sure I could make 5:00am and then tackle Las Vegas. I think we will need some energy to enjoy it.

I think you%26#39;re smart to do the 9 a.m. thing. If you leave at 5, you can really blast through the LA and San Bernardino morning traffic, but leaving at 9 will get you to the most conjested parts well after the morning rush is over.

It is a nice drive, really, especially once you get past the high desert (Victorville, etc.)

We usually drive through LA and end up getting off the freeway at Summit (just after the 210 meets the 15) There%26#39;s a Chevron station there that is pretty easy access from the freeway and they have very clean bathrooms.

Then, we stop in Barstow again for more gas and a little stretch. Note: The outlets advertised there are not really very good and you%26#39;d do better to go to the Primm Outlets that are literally on the border of California and Nevada -- you can%26#39;t miss them and they have some really good stores there.

    Between Barstow and Primm, there is a little tiny town called Baker, which purports to be home of the world%26#39;s largest thermometer. There%26#39;s this horrid old restaurant there called Bun Boy, which is sort of a diner meet Happy Eater type place. You don%26#39;t have to even stop there to get the feel of the place, just keep driving. It is a very funny, only in rural US kind of place. And, being from Britian, you%26#39;ll love the signs you%26#39;ll be seeing for Bun Boy all along the way to Vegas....Let%26#39;s just say they used a typestyle that makes the ';n'; look like an ';m.';

    accomodations for large families

We will be visiting Disneyland in a couple of weeks. We have a family of 7 (5 kids0. It%26#39;s hard to find good accomodations for so many, without have to pay for 2 rooms.

Does anyone have any leads on family suites that will sleep us all comfortably, be clean, offer a continental breakfast, and not break the bank?!! We would like to spend no more than around $150 per night.....

    Thanks.............

    Gale

    accomodations for large families

Desert Inn and Suites! It is very close (right across the street, a 5-minute walk to the main gates), reasonably priced, and best of all, it has family suites that will sleep from 6-10 people! You can get two queens and a pull-out sofa, four queens, or four queens and a pullout sofa, depending which suite you book. There is a free breakfast, although it%26#39;s nothing to write home about. But there are fridges and microwaves in the rooms, so you can supplement with your own cereal and such.

The Carousel Inn and Suites also has a few suites that will sleep 7, but they%26#39;re usually booked way in advance, and they%26#39;re more expensive. But you could check just in case. It%26#39;s also right across the street.

We have a family of 6, so I know how hard it is to find family suites. Especially affordable ones!

Only problem is, if you%26#39;re going in a couple of weeks, you might have trouble finding rooms this late. But with it being off-season, maybe you%26#39;ll get lucky.

    Bowling In SF ?

    Hi

We are staying at the Castle Inn (April 25 - May 2). My father-in-law is eager bowler and he would love to try bowling in an U.S bowling alley (Is that the right word?:)).

Could someone suggest a place close to our hotel/motel ?

    Thanks in advance :)

    - Pete

    Bowling In SF ?

There%26#39;s only one bowling alley left in SF, a sad state of affairs.

Presidio Bowl in the old Presidio

This site gives some comprehensive info:

    www.gocitykids.com/browse/attraction.jsp…

You can use the occasion to look at one of the few urban national parks, the Presidio, home of the Letterman Center for Digital Arts, aka, George Lucas%26#39; new campus (it%26#39;s not open to the public, but the park is, of course)

If your father-in-law wants to try something novel, there is virtual bowling at the Sony Metreon:

    http://www.hyperbowl.com/

    Bowling In SF ?

But wait, there is actually another bowling alley in SF. It is near Yerba Buena Center

    http://www.skatebowl.com/

Neither of these (Presidio or skarebowl)is that close to your hotel, but can be incorporated with a tour of the Presidio, as suggested, or a visit to downtown. Both are accessible by public transport.

If you have a car, there is also Serra Bowl

in Daly City, and Sea Bowl in Pacifica

    http://fun2spare.2gobowl.com/?page=Serra_Bowl

    http://www.seabowl.com/

Unfortunately, bowling as a sport is not as popular as it was 20-30 years ago, so many alleys have disappeared. It was always a good place for first dates.

    Thanks Girasol :)

Since we will have a car, Presidio won%26#39;t

be a problem :) I have to look around if they have a website for more info.

    -Pete

You might like these reviews on the various bowling alleys in SF (including a sad R.I.P. to the deceased Japantown Bowl):

    www.yelp.com/biz/p_k-qvXy0kX8pxUsfHQUaQ

I%26#39;m a SF native. Presidio bowl is descent, just a little old. I wouldn%26#39;t go to Yerba Buena bowl if I were you. They have something like 10 lanes total, no joke. If you have a car, look up Sea Bowl in Pacifica. The drive to the bowling alley is a bit far, but it%26#39;s a beautiful drive that goes all the way down the Pacifica coast. The bowling alley itself was recently renovated, so it%26#39;s clean and in tip-top shape.

If you can travel outside San Francisco, I also recommend Sea Bowl. It%26#39;s the nicest alley in the SF area. It%26#39;s also near the ocean, so you can quickly drive next to the water or to the beach.

San Diego in June with 2 kids

We%26#39;re considering a one-week trip to San Diego in mid-June with our two children, 3 %26amp; 6. I%26#39;m thinking that we would rent a 2 bedroom condo rather than stay in a hotel suite, but I';d love advice about location. Mission Beach? Mission Bay? Is the bayside only for boating activities, or can children play in the water and at the beach?

Any advice on what would make sense? We don%26#39;t mind a certain degree of bustle and activity, and we%26#39;d love to be able to walk to restaurants, etc. But late-night partying within earshot would be a definite minus.

San Diego in June with 2 kids

If you rent in the area called Mission Beach you will be able to walk to the beach or the bay. There are beaches and children can play on the bayside. There are also some playgrounds. I think the bay side is quieter. You never know for sure who is going to rent next door to you so there is always the chance that party people will be around. Either way the area is nice.

San Diego in June with 2 kids

At Mission bay, there are no restaruants within walking distance. We stayed in the Hillcrest area with tons of great restaraunts, but drive to beach.

If you could find an affordable condo in Coronado bay, that would be ideal. Beach and restaraunts close. Easy drive to zoo and other activities.

NOt true about restaurants . If you are in MIssion Beach area the bay and beach are only 2-3 blocks apart and there are restaurants.

The bayside is much better for kids - quieter and away from the throngs loud crowds. The Catamarran is a very nice hotel, and they have some fun water activities and rentals. You%26#39;d be far enough off the bar party-zone as well.

Many thanks! All very helpful. I%26#39;ll look into the Catamaran, and also into rentals in Mission Bay.

    Are we mad to drive?

Have never been to the states and are really looking forward to our holiday 5nights in L.A,then driving to Las Vegas for 6 nights, returning t L.A for 3 nights.Am a little worried about driving. We are due to land 5.30p.m at L.A and our hotel is in Studio City.Looks very easy route on map but feel this is probably not the case.Had considered staying at airport hotel for first night but worried that might %26#39;waste a day%26#39;.What are your thoughts?

    Are we mad to drive?

We find driving in the US very good, roads are well sign posted, but the turn off%26#39;s from the freeways are almost on top of you after the signposts. If you get lost there are always motels along the highway where you can pull off, at very resonable rates I might add. Hope this has helped, have a great holiday.

    Are we mad to drive?

Driving in LA is not so bad if you are not in a hurry! You didn%26#39;t say whether you are arriving at 5:30pm on the weekday or weekend? If on the weekend, you shouldn%26#39;t have too much traffic driving to Studio City, but on the weekday, you will have rush hour traffic.

But I agree with you about the ';waste of day';. I would just get to your intended destination so that the next day you are ready to just go out and be a tourist!

Enjoy your vacation! I hope someday, I will be a tourist in your country!!

If your plane lands at 5:30, by the time you clear customs, get your luggage and your rental car, traffic should be almost done. You%26#39;ll have no problem getting to Studio City, it is an easy drive.

If you don%26#39;t already have your flight booked for Vegas, fly out of Burbank. It is close to Studio City and much smaller and easier to get in and out of.

you could take the super shuttle to your hotel, then pick up the car the next day. supershuttle.com

I really hate to drive after I%26#39;ve flown for 10 or 15 hours.

check out my list of fun things to do in Cali

    Have fun

    Shawin

    Know the feeling.

I drive 40,000 miles a year in the UK and the thought of switching sides scared me witless.

Going for the fourth time this year, and I willbe driving again.

    My thoughts.\

driving is not difficult in the States - you will have an automatic, so one less thing to worry about.

Roads are generally wider (and outside rush hour quieter).

Signs are in English making instructions understandable.

Have a good map (we use a deLorme map 2miles to 1 inch) available in the UK.

Take trips in small chunks - our first drive to Las Vegas we stopped for 2 days Palm Springs (planned 1 but loved it) and 1 night at Lake Havasu City.

    Keep your itinery flexible.

Signs for streets hung across the road indicate the road you are crossing not the road you are on. (This was the only significant mistake we made, which got us lost in the rush hour!!)

In answer to your main question, this year we are taking a taxi to North Hollywood, where we will stay 3 nights, going to Universal by subway, walking around the sights, and then picking up a car and driving out of LA to the coast.

Saves 2 days rental plus allows acclimatisation and jet lag recovery.

    We will be there 30/6 - 27/7/06

For me, driving in HK was the best preparation, though driving on the %26#39;other%26#39; side of the road was not nearly as bad as I had thought, largely as there are few roundabouts!

    1. Get SatNav or GPs for your car from the rental company

    2. You can turn right on a red light when looking to see if the coast is clear

    3. When turning left, there is a seperate %26#39;bay%26#39; indicated by a thick unbroken line and an arrow painted on the road.

Turning left takes concentration, especially when the oncoming lane is turning right at you.

The freeways can be crazy and need concentration (though people drive much slower at night), keep right if you have to.

Drivers are polite, though some can hoot you if you dont turn right on a red light.

All in all, you will get used to it :)

Thanks everyone for your tips and suggestions.Think we%26#39;re gonna brave it and keep our fingers crossed that we don%26#39;t start our hols with an arguement over my map reading skills(or lack of)!!!!

One thing no one has said so far and is the most important: Fly to Vegas, don%26#39;t drive. It%26#39;s a long, somewhat treacherous, very ugly and uninspiring drive. It%26#39;s faster and cheaper to fly. There are flights all the time and it takes only 45 minutes to an hour to get there. You won%26#39;t need a car in Vegas and you%26#39;ll save TWO days by flying (it%26#39;s a full day getting there and a full day back, when you drive).

    Hi Yogachik,

We thought we would drive as with 4 in our group ,thought flight would be too expensive. Also thought having a car might be nice so that we could visit Hoover Dam.

Bit worried by your comment of route being %26#39;trecherous%26#39;though,what do you mean by that?

The drive to Vegas is not that treacherous (only if you end up in a major rain storm or drive on a long holiday weekend). While the drive is monotonous, for people who have never been through the California desert, it is actually very pretty. It is about a 5 hour drive and there are places to stop and stretch. People do tend to drive VERY fast on the the roads, so stay to the right and be aware of your surroundings, but I would not be too worried, we drive it all the time and have never had a problem.

When we fly, we fly out of Burbank (much easier than LAX) and get tickets way in advance. On SWA it is about $49 one way.

Flying definately takes less time, but I would not deter you from driving if you prefer to drive. Plus Hoover Dam is definately worht a stop. There are also several outlets along the route if you enjoy shopping. Also, there is Calico, an old ghost town that is interesting.

  • Skiing & snowboarding at Mammouth CA...need help

Hello....Can anyone help me. I want to go skiing or snowboarding at Mammouth with my daughter. I have looked online, and it seems that they have their own little village there! and that you have to stay there, in order to actually take part? Has anyone been? and if so, can you give me any advice. The hotels in Mammouths village are really expensive, way too much for our budget, so I was wondering if you can stay outside, and then use the facilities? (obviously pay) We%26#39;d like a lesson or two...but it all seems bookable, only if you book their hotels. We have never done this before, and are absolutely in the dark on this. Any help would be great.

    Thanks....

Skiing %26amp; snowboarding at Mammouth CA...need help

We go to Mammoth every summer but we actually went for a week over the MLK holiday. While it%26#39;s true that there is a little village area I wouldn%26#39;t say that very much goes on there. The housing/condos are on the upper floors and the bottom floors have the shops and restaurants. It%26#39;s not yet that robust becuase it%26#39;s still being built up. There is a gondola that leaves from the village and dumps you out at the Canyon chair lift. That lift area gets pretty crowded. We actually stayed really close to Juniper Springs which is just next to the eagle express which is a much faster load area. We stayed at the Summit Condos and it was easy ski in and out. It is up the street from the Town as is the village area. I would not nor have I ever stayed at the Village. I would not nor have I ever stayed at the top where the Mammoth Mountain Inn is located as it is too far up and the drive to town is required to do anything. The eagle express chair lift is pretty close to the Village so if you wanted you can certainly go there. There are free shuttles all day to drive you around.

Here%26#39;s the link to the Mammoth Mountain wher eyou can get info for tix. My daughter took group lessons for snowboarding and we didn%26#39;t stay in the village.

    http://www.mammothmountain.com/

    We rented through Mammoth Premiere:

Here%26#39;s one of the units our group rented:

    mammothpremiere.com/properties/鈥u67.shtml

It has an awesome view and is super close to the eagle express. We just walked over every day. Also free covered parking which is important.

We have also stayed right at juniper springs though this guy who is great:

    http://www.summitgateway.com/

We have also stayed at Mammoth Greesn but that is a little further away, not much, but is pretty expensive.

    Need more info?

Skiing %26amp; snowboarding at Mammouth CA...need help

Check out the TripAdvisor for hotels at Mammoth as they indicate an ';average'; price per night. With that, then check to see how close it is to a shuttle to take you where you want to go. Once you get there, I%26#39;m sure there will be plenty of answers to your questions.

Google ';Shuttle at Mammoth Lakes'; and you will find a map of the various routes.

Go to www.visitmammoth.com and click on lodging to see all the lodging in Mammoth. There are many, many, many options other than the mountain-owned condos.

There%26#39;s an Econo Lodge, a TravelLodge, etc, as well as many condos and inns.

Thank you so much for your messages. I will look at all the links. I cant actually visualise anything (probably my age!!) I am finding this so hard to organise. I actually live in the UK, and my daughter is in CA, I am going to visit her in 3 weeks time, and I asked her if we could go snowboarding (I am nearly 60 and want to try it before I am drawing my pension!!) She is happy to take me, but doesnt have time to research anything, due to a very busy work schedule. (she has never been before either) Is the Mammouth mountain a free space? I mean here in the UK if you want to go to a mountain, it belongs to no-one, and you can climb, ski, do anything. So...is Mammouth owned by the complex? or is it just a mountain, anyone can go to, and companies have places hotels and shops there. Also, I dont know what a gondola is? It is a boat in the UK, so I am guessing you cant drive all the way? I keep seeing this on sites re this mountain. Do you have to get a boat to the mountain? or is a gondola something else in the US? Maybe a gondola is the lift thing that takes you up? We have no equipment at all, and will need it. Will they have everything to hire, even gloves? and trousers/jackets do you think? Also, do you know if there is snow all year round, or just in the winter months. I am so sorry I sound stupid! Thank you all for your posts, its really kind of you.

Actually, what is really confusing me, is this.

Do I book and pay for a couple of lessons first. Book equipment first. Book accomodation first. It is all a catch 22, because if I book a hotel or motel, and they dont have room for us to ski or snowboard, then its a waste. Or, if we pay lessons thencan find anywhere to stay, we lose the money. I just dont know what I should do first, Their site is not cleat to me. I looked again on the mammouthmountain site, and it doesnt have a %26#39;contact us%26#39; link - nor does it let you book lessons, ?

The mountain does not sell out, nor do they sell out of rental equipment, so don%26#39;t worry.

First, book your hotel. Many of the condos and hotels on the site I suggested, www.visitmammoth.com, offer free lift tickets with your stay - be sure to click on the special offers area of the site.

Don%26#39;t worry about anything else until you get to Mammoth. As far as being an open mountain, you cannot hike the resort itself and not pay for a lift ticket (you can hike to different chutes and runs from the top of a lift). There are other mountains in the Mammoth Lakes area that you can hike and ski for free - but you have to be an expert and have some avalanche knowledge.

I also recommend visiting the mammothmountain.com forums and asking questions there, the locals (like me) are very helpful. There is also a direct phone number (rather than a 800 number) for the Mammoth Visitors Bureau on the visitmammoth.com site.

The MLK holiday is one of the really crowded times and we had no problems booking accomodations, equipment rentals, and lessons. Mammoth Mountain is actually quite large with like 26 chair lifts and dozens of runs.

You should decide what you want to spend first and then find a place that%26#39;s suitable. A condo is perfect as you can eat in if that suits your budget better than having all your meals out.

To help you visualize the whole village thing let%26#39;s start with the town of Mammoth. It%26#39;s like lots of mountain towns in that it has shops, restaurants, a grocery and movie theater, etc. The Village is but a small area west of the town. The gondola is an aerial tram that takes skiers up the mountain for skiing.

Unless you have GPS I%26#39;d rule out hiking in the winter. The snow was very deep when we were there in Jan and it has continued to snow. As stated before there is avalanche danger in areas not maintained by the resort.

The ski lifts and runs are built and maintained by a private company so you must pay to use them.

You will have no problem getting lessons or renting gear. Not only does the resort rent gear but there are businesses in town that will also rent you gear. You can even wait until you arrive to make these arrangements if you feel the least bit aprehensive. Mammoth Mountain has a huge staff.

Thank you SO very much. This has been really helpful to me. I am going to stop worrying now, book my flight to LA, book a hotel (it%26#39;s only going to be for 2 nights in Mammouth anyway) I can actually understand the whole thing now. I just thought it was a mountain (a single mountain) you parked at the bottom, and were taken up, possibly by the hotels services.....THATS why I thought I had to use one of their hotels, and bearing in mind I though it was one little mountain.

My daughter, as she was busy, sent me the link to mytripadvisor, and I had no idea people were so helpful, I cant thank you enough.

This will be so much fun! I tried surfing twice, and broke my wrist ....lets see what I break this time! but you know, it%26#39;ll be worth it - I dont want to have any regrets in my life, I want to try everything. Nothing like this was available when I was in my teens, you couldnt even fly to America unless you were rich....people went by boat. So,,,,I am not going to let any opportunity pass me by - I wont be hiking, but I have to try a snowboard and ski%26#39;s - now to find a warm hat on ebay!

Thank you SO much. Maggi from Berkshire, england.

Maggie, be sure to rent wrist guards with your snowboard. I%26#39;m sure you can rent ski clothing, but I don%26#39;t know where. That%26#39;s a question for the visitors bureau or the Mammoth Mountain Forums (like this one, but attached to the official Mammoth site -

    http://forums.mammothmountain.com/forum)

And by the way, Mammoth is by no means a small little mountain. It%26#39;s one of the largest ski resorts in America with over 30 chair lifts (including the gondolas - which is an enclosed small tram-like car that takes you to the top of the mountain). The ski resort is huge.

The town itself is small, with lots of restaurants, cafes, shops (some discount outlets like Ralph Lauren and Coach), movie theaters.

Mammoth Mountain Resort will rent you clothing as well. Specifically they have the Bib and jackets for children and adults.

    Here%26#39;s the link for rates:

At the bottom of this page is a more complete list of gear rentals including wrist guards and clothing:

    Dungeness Crab

I have read in another post about Dungeness Crab being a specialty in San Francisco. How are they usually prepared? Where is the best place to get fresh Dungeness Crab?

    Dungeness Crab

    Dungeness crab is wonderful....

They are cooked...and you can easily find some at the open areas at Fisherman Wharf where they sell crabs. We like the ones that are the heavier ones as they seem to be better; but each their own.

The restaurants by Fisherman wharf (if its crab season - right now it is) will usually offer them on the menu during crab season.

If you like crab in sauces (garlic, and other), many Chinese restaurants will cook crab up and put sauces on top. These can be downright wonderful - great thing to enjoy.

Several times during the year local charities or other organizetions will have a Crab Feed. You pay one price and then enjoy all the crab you ever wanted to eat (come hungry).

The key thing is that you do need to shell them....so they can take a bit of time to eat...but its a really fun activity to do with people you enjoy eating with. Dungeness crab and sourdough bread from San Francisco - with a glass of Chardonnay or other wine - now that%26#39;s a perfect meal!

You can catch crabs in the area - its done by using crab cages and setting them. The most successful people however are the commercial fisherman as they know where and how to set the crab cages. We generally end up with just star fish in ours and no crab, but we have enjoyed crabbing from time to time.

    Dungeness Crab

Calif. Dungeness Crab is harvested from the Oregon border down to Central Calif. The official season in No. Calif. is Dec. 1st to July 15th. and about a mo. earlier for the Central Coast. During crab season there is, indeed, a frenzy of special wine/food events, festivals and of course, Dungeness on the menus of many restaurants up and down the Calif. coast, not just in the San Fran. area. Most crabs are boiled whole and then served dismembered and oftentimes already cracked (broken open along the shell/legs to allow easier extraction and eating). It can be a messy business, eating crab--but that%26#39;s the fun of it and we usually put down newspaper or butcher paper on a big table, with everyone getting a big cloth napkin to cover themselves and then going at it with bare hands and crab picking/extraction utinsels. Sounds and looks barbaric, but it%26#39;s quite a popular social event! The cooked crab is usually accompanied with sourdough bread and lots of bright, crisp white of one%26#39;s choice (a dryish Riesling is great). Many restaurants serve whole, cracked crab or will put fresh crab in dishes from omelets to crab cakes (very popular) to salads to stews. Pretty much anything goes!

The Swan Oyster Depot on Polk Street near California.

Is there a great place to get crab cakes?

You will find crab cakes on menus everywhere.

The best I have had in ages was fairly recently at ';Sutro%26#39;s'; at Cliff House.

    Enjoy.

    2 Night stay LA

In transit in LA Wed/Fri of this week (4 adults) Any suggestions re moderately priced hotel (maybe with airport shuttle as we are outbound on different flights)?

Plan to go to Pacific Palisades for half day and may also visit Santa Monica.

    2 Night stay LA

I don%26#39;t know of any hotels that have a shuttle (outside of the LAX hotels). And most hotels in Santa Monica are not ';moderately'; priced. Did you look here? Of the list, I recommend Ambrose and California and Shangri La

    tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g33052-Santa_Monica_C…

    2 Night stay LA

Taxi fare for the 4 of you should run about $25 if you stay on the Westside (Santa Monica, West LA, Brentwood, Westwood, etc).

An inexpensive hotel on the westside is the Westwood Pacific Hotel:

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g32655-d82650-R…

This is part of the giant BEST WESTERN Hotel chain which, although now the largest international hotel chain, had its beginnings here in the Western United States. Not a fancy place, but great, central location to the westside of L.A. near the corner of the 405 Freeway and Santa Monica Bl.

There are buses that run on Santa Monica Bl that will take you on the 15 minute journey to the beach at Santa Monica (and its city centre).

Pacific Palisades is just north of Santa Monica so it is accessible either by a second bus or by taxi.

BTW, there is a city bus that you can take to get you to the airport if you don%26#39;t want to spend the $25 for the taxi each time. It requires you to walk a few blocks east to the corner of Sepulveda Bl and Santa Monica Bl (a major intersection). From there, take the #6 Culver City bus headed south (a right turn from Santa Monica Bl). 46 minutes later (at a cost of 75 cents), you will be dropped at the LAX Transit Center (which is a fancy name for the area that the buses pull in which is 1/2 km (1/4 mile) from the outside of the gates to LAX. You then need to walk into the parking area that is next to the bus area that is called PARKING LOT C and take the free shuttle bus into the airport -- it stops at evety terminal. You may have to wait up to 15 minutes for the next bus. The whole trip could take as long as 1 hour and 15 minutes -- a lot longer than a taxi ride of about 20 minutes but, of course, a lot cheaper.

Many tks for both replys. We are willing to catch bus or taxi to Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades, but, need a shuttle to airport. We need three star hotel located nth, nth/west of LAX perhaps shopping and eateries close by to use as a base.

    tks again

Running over the golden gate bridge...in training you see!

ok my wife and i are running in the Niagara Falls ½ marathon in october 21st and are staying at the Westin St francis on 5th -9th Oct.

We may sound fit but we generally blag out way round races with lots of walks etc finishing in just over 2 hours.

As part of our training we want to run over the golden gate bridge and back again. How far would this be door to door? How far from the westin st francis to the start of the bridge. gow long is the bridge? Is it hilly running to the bridge?

To be honest if its too hard i will quite happily forget it!!

    cheers

Running over the golden gate bridge...in training you see!

You are looking at about 14 miles round trip (more than a half marathon. If you run east to Davis St, then turn left, you will hit the Embarcadero. Stay on the shoreline of the bay. There are 2 climbs, both about 200%26#39;, 1 in Fort Mason, the other to the bridge from the shoreline. You could just run one way and keep going into Sausalito, a couple more miles ( all downhill) and take the ferry back.

Or take a bus to the toll plaza, run across the bridge (1.7 miles) continue to Sausalito. Take the ferry back to Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf or the Ferry Building (about 4 miles total)

Here is a map with some mileage markers and route laid out.

hotel somewhat convenient to Universal Studios, LA, for 6...

Iam trying to find a suite type hotel that is convenient to Universal Studios in CA. Hopefully they serve breakfast. What is the best location and hotel?

hotel somewhat convenient to Universal Studios, LA, for 6...

Check out the Orchid Suites in Hollywood. It%26#39;s very close to the Metro that takes you directly to Universal Studio, and is walking distance from other sights like the Walk of Fame.

hotel somewhat convenient to Universal Studios, LA, for 6...

Within a few minutes to Universal are two MODEST hotels:

The Orchid Suites (which is behind the Chinese Theatre

    and

The Comfort Inn and Suites (a national chain of modest hotels):

In nearby Burbank is the Best Western Media Center Inn %26amp; Suites -- a little better quality than the 2 prior. (10 minute commute):

    (tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g32123-d478254-鈥?/a>)

Tell us more about your price range, quality required and how far from Universal you would consider ';convenient';.

We would like a nicer quality hotel in a good neighborhood - one we can walk to restaurants, etc. Is Burbank the place to be?Thanks

Burbank is a very nice area. Actually many studios are located in Burbank. If you stay at a hotel close to the Media Center it%26#39;s close and walking distance to a variety of restaurants, movie theaters, and it%26#39;s very lively during the weekends. Hopskipjump already gave you a recommendation of a hotel in Burbank. There%26#39;s also the Holiday Inn at the Burbank Media Center. There%26#39;s 2 towers. I believe one of them are for suites. And it%26#39;s close to Universal Studios.

Thanks for your help. Any other suggestions for our trip are appreciated. 2 days in LA at Universal and 4 days in the Palm Springs area.

You should be able to do Universal in one day. Get there early and do the tram ride first. Warner Brothers Studio is nearby and they also offer studio tours. Their tour is a little more intimate then the Universal tour, maybe 10 or so in a group. Takes about two hours. If you%26#39;re there during the week you might see a few actors. My daughters are big ';Gilmore Girl'; fans and enjoyed seeing the ';GG'; set. You should probably call ahead for the WB tour if you are interested in it.

Sherton Universal and Universal Hilton are right at the theme park. It doesn%26#39;t get much more convenient then that. I don%26#39;t know why these other guys are pointing you to Hollywood. Also consider the Sportsmen%26#39;s Lodge Hotel in Studio City.

    Amen to that, Straightdope.

I%26#39;d choose the Hilton. If you want to venture out, you can drive anywhere from here with easy access to the freeway, and public transport is available at the bottom of the hill. I think this is your best bet.

  • Will Tuesday 7th March be busy at Disneyland?

Hi, we have only one day to spend in Disneyland, two adults. Just wondering if Tuesday 7th March will be busy at Disneyland? Is it hoilday time in CA or any special events going on?

    Thanks

Will Tuesday 7th March be busy at Disneyland?

I think you should find the parks fairly quiet.

I know of no special events, and the official start to Spring break (6 week period) is March 10th.

No guarantees, but I think you will find the park to be on the light side :)

Will Tuesday 7th March be busy at Disneyland?

Thanks for that info. It wil lbe good to experience the park without too many people around.

I am crushed as I have just looked on the Disney Website %26amp; found that there will be no Fireworks during the week, :( I was really looking forward to them, even had my position pick out, next to teh Walt Disney statue. What a shame, just means I will have to go back another time.

Plus, with it being just the two of you, you will get a lot more done than a family with kids would.

It%26#39;s a lot easier to move around the park without kids (plus you won%26#39;t have to wait an hour cause one of them HAS to ride Dumbo).

Even when it%26#39;s my wife %26amp; I AND our 2-year-old, we get a lot done. When we came this last weekend with 5 other family members, we wasted a lot of time deciding what we were going to do next or where we were going to eat.

Long story short...during the week, 2 adults should have no problem seeing all they want to see. Just make sure you get there when the park opens.

Try to see the firework show if you can. Im lucky enough to live on a hill where I can see them and they%26#39;re awesome and even better in person. But i would take a less crowded disneyland with no fireworks over a crowded disneyland with fireworks any day.

It currently looks like the special 50th Fireworks will end on Sunday, October 1st, 2006.

Then more than likely, about 6 weeks without fireworks, then a Christmas themed version that would be offered daily thru the end of the year.

And then a new fireworks show premiering in June of 2007.

Disney is known for changing their mind many times, so things could easily change.

  • suite hotels for a family of 5 in or around disneyland

any suggestions as to the best of the suite hotels to stay in or around the disneyland area. i%26#39;ve looked at the tripadvisor site %26amp; have the top rated hotels in anaheim but when speaking to a native angelian he told me not to stay in ananheim as it%26#39;s only got the disneyland parks %26amp; i%26#39;m miles from universal studios %26amp; beeches etc

he%26#39;s telling me to stay around burbank transport not a problem as we intend to rent a car for the stay any advice welcome

suite hotels for a family of 5 in or around disneyland

You will find Orange County (Anaheim, Buena Park, etc.) hotel rates usually lower than those in the LA area (including Burbank).

Also, Orange County is a lot closer to the beaches than Burbank is. Universal Studios is good for one day, so you probably will do better in the Anaheim area, as there are a lot more choices.

Look into the Residence Inn chain by Marriott, all their rooms are suites with a kitchen. Staybridge Suites by Holiday Inn is another. Also Embassy Suites. Most of these come with a free breakfast, and other things, like a free happy hour, with beer and wine.

suite hotels for a family of 5 in or around disneyland

We (family of 5) stayed in a suite at the Hampton Inn in Garden Grove (about 1 mile from Disneyland) and were absolutely thrilled with it. We also did other things than just Disneyland, but like the previous poster stated, the rates are better away from LA.

There%26#39;s an Embassy Suites in Santa Ana, Right off the 55 Freeway. It%26#39;s easy Access to Newport Beach and Balboa Island, South Coast Plaza and Disneyland. They may even have a Disney shuttle if you set it up at check-in. You are also a reasonable distance from the Irvine Spectrum, a huge shopping, dining, and %26#39;entertainment%26#39; complex. Kinda an outdoor mall type thing that%26#39;s full of people on weekend nights. But be aware, you will not be in the Disney zone. You are right off a major freeway and you will have to drive to do *anything and everything*.

Like Darkbeer said, Embassy Suites are great because of all the stuff you get with them. When I travel to the OC, I stay at the Brea (North of Disney) one because of its great location, the free breakfast and cocktail hour. The rooms are big and clean and the hotels are always neat looking inside.

Even in Burbank, you are still miles from the Beaches. Sure, you are close to Universal, but if you are staying for any amount of time and need to fill it, I%26#39;d rather stay closer in the Orange County area than have to commute from Burbank. JMHO. Whatever you decide, have a wonderful trip!

Our family of 4 also stayed at the Residence inn at Garden Grove. We loved it also. The suite was spacious with a full kitchen, dining table, sofa, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 3 TV%26#39;s, clean and modern. Would definitely stay again. It is not within walking distance of the park but the shuttle stops right outside the hotel. Target stor, bank, pharmacy, some shops and several restaurants within a very short walk. Great for a family that wants a bit of space.

We also stayed at the residence inn garden grove. We were a family of 5 and had a one bedroom suite. Having the kitchen and dining table was great. The breakfasts are OK and they are free. We hired a car and drove ourselves to Universal, Sea World and Legoland. The hotel is close to target and they sell milk, bread, juice etc.

Check out Towneplace Suites by Marriott in Anaheim. I think this property is Marriott%26#39;s best kept secret. Great location, restaurants within a block, affordable, and a safe, clean happening area. Close to Angel%26#39;s Stadium. Hotel staff is friendly, informative, and is quick to help in any way needed. Tour buses/transporation picks up at Hotel door. Disneyland is a short drive away and Universal is up HWY 5 to 101 about 30 mins. away.

We just got back from our Disneyland vacation. Our hotel, Marriott Residence Inn at Garden Grove was a super choice. Just as the other poster described. We will definately stay there again.

    j

We stayed in a Kidsuite in Holiday Inn Buena Park. It was fine for a short stay and very cheap. Nice pool too and opposite Knott%26#39;s. Also very convenient to the freeway (took 10 minutes to get to Disney).

i%26#39;ve been reading some of your posts %26amp; notice u have the local expert sign for anaheim

maybe u can give me a little bit more advice

trying to narrow our hotel/place to stay down to somewhere that we can be comfortable as a family.

preferably a 2 bedroom suite big enough to sleep mum dad %26amp; 3 children ---17, 13 %26amp; 6 we think a suite hotel would be best as we can come ';home'; after a day in the park %26amp; cook %26amp; eat at our leisure. we looked at the howard johnsons %26amp; saw that they have been voted No. 1 in the tripadvisor family choices but unfortunately the suites don%26#39;t come with a kitchen

we have looked at the marriott residence inn anaheim main gate %26amp; marriott residence inn garden grove both have suites (with kitchens) with 2 bedrooms %26amp; a sofa bed so we have plenty of room

can u tell me if the 1 in garden grove is worth the extra $90.00 a nite

we can get the anaheim maingate penthouse suite for $189 a nite but they want $279 in garden grove

it%26#39;s not exactly the same deal--- penthouse suite versus 2 bedroom suite but do u know or for that matter does anybody know what the difference is between the 2 %26amp; is it worth paying the extra $%26#39;s

another question ---are we far away from the beaches -we would like to spend at least 1 day in sand %26amp; the sea we%26#39;ve been told anaheim is not far from huntington beach %26amp; seal beach

    thanks in advance

Since I am the ';local'; expert, I don%26#39;t spend much time in the hotels, so it is hard for me to compare the two based on what they offer inside.

The Garden Grove location is only about one mile south of the Anaheim location, so actually a bit closer to the beaches, but no major difference.

Both Residence Inns offer shuttle service to Disneyland via the ART system.

The hotel chains I mentioned earlier was due to the fact they came with kitchens and other amenities.

I think either choice would work, so for me, I would go with the better deal.

I would go read reviews here at TripAdvisor of both hotels and make a decision.

Mama%26#39;s is at 1701 Stockton across from Washington Square park. They don%26#39;t take reservations and the lines can get long, but the food is fabulous. You might also consider picking up a focaccia at the Liguria Bakery also across the street from Mama%26#39;s. Liguria has been in business for eons and their focaccia is great. You can have it as a snack in your hotel room or in the park.

    Restaraunts for toddlers and in-laws

I would like ideas for really good family friendly restraunts in all price ranges in San Diego. We are not going until August, but I want to do research, because we will probobly eat out every night we are there. My in-laws are British and really stay away from anything spicy. My mother in-law cannot eat onions. I think they prefer meat and potatoes. No mexican! My toddlers are actually a little easier. Thanks for you help.

    Restaraunts for toddlers and in-laws

No problem. We have lots of restaurants with meat and potatoes . Do they eat sea food? It would help to know what part of town you will be staying in . I am sure many of the same chains that are in San Jose are also here. ONe fun place that people seem to like is the Corvette Diner. It is a 50s style hamburger, milkshake kind of place(they have other things too, check them out on line.) with juke boxes to play and waitresses in poodle skirts. We also have lots of steak house/grill places all over town. There is a lovely restaurant in the middle of Balboa Park called The Prado. It has a very varied menu. Actually If you look at the cohnrestaurants.com youwill find several restaurants(including the 2 I mentioned and you can see a few others and read their menus.Give me a little more info on where and I can help more.

    Restaraunts for toddlers and in-laws

    Thanks for the tip.

We will probobly stay on Mission Beach. We are considering Coronado, but we found a rental we are happy with on Mission Beach.

    napa valley

we are planning to go to Napa next week. We are going to book a tour to do some wine tasting. There are a few wineries that we would really like to see. Do you know if the tours allow you to go to the wineries of your choice?

    napa valley

Mostly tours select the wineries for you. My wife and I went on the Napa Valley Wine Shuttle last April and they choose a bunch of wineries for us. These wineries ranged from the more commercial (Mondavi, Coppola, BV) to the small family operations (Milat, Monticello, Esquisse) and some other known wineries that are not quite as big (Raymond, V. Sattui). Overall we found the variety to be good.

The day after the tour we ventured out on our own and looked for smaller places or places that we know we like the wine. We visited places like Stelzner in Stags Leap, Goosecross, Sterling, Seqouia Grove and some others that are escaping me right now.

I felt that for my wife%26#39;s first time in Napa starting with the tour was the right way to go.

    Enjoy!

    napa valley

Wine tours is the best way to get an orientation of Napa Valley. You visit wineries that they have predefined. You will visit fewer wineries this way. It takes time to move a bus load of people in/out.

Your next trip you now know the lay of the land, and plan your own itinerary - in your rental vehicle.

If you wish a good medium, consider taking a Limosine tour. Though I have heard that not all wineries welcome the limos because of limited parking space.

Excellent Points StateRef. I wanted to follow up and say that the tour we went on only had about 8 other people in the van, so you normally aren%26#39;t talking about a lot of other people.

I need advice on out of the way things to do, great food and fun. Also headed to Sonoma on the 15th. Great eats there? Also the best wine places to visit. Any with free tastings? Any and all advice is accepted!

    Headed there on March 11

The advice depends on whether you are a Bush supporter or not...If you are a Bush supporter then the McDonald%26#39;s in Sonoma is a great place to go...If you are not a Bush supporter, then try the Girl %26amp; the fig, LaSalette or Deuce. All are in Downtown Sonoma...

J/K on the Bush stuff! :) (actually, no not really) ;p

    Headed there on March 11

Start with the ';One Thing'; thread that ABUCKEYE posted for ideas, and them give us an idea of what you think is fun.

Sonoma has wonderful food. I%26#39;ll leave that for those who have their favorites to suggest.

SD in two days! need tips and recs, please!!

    Hello everybody!

We are arriving in two days to San Diego and would like very much to have your thoughts and opinions on what to do...

We are a couple on our mid-30%26#39;s, living in NYC, no kids, and are arriving to SD Thursday morning (and leaving Saturday night in the red-eye). We would be most grateful if you told us your opinion/tips on what to do. We are staying in Humprey%26#39;s Half Moon Inn and the only thing that we HAVE TO do is go to a concert in the Symphony Hall Thursday night.

There are two things that we want to do:

    1. go whale watching while kayaking. How is the weather this time of year? Any recommended or favourite companies?

    2. Eat sushi. A friend recommended us three restaurants: Nobu Gourmet Japanese Restaurant (is it from the Nobu restaurant chain?), Meiki Japanese Restaurant, Sushi USA, Sushi Ota. We are into great sushi, fresh fish; we don%26#39;t need the ambience and love to sit at the sushi bar. Any favourites?

We would also like recommendations on breakfast or other type of restaurants. We don%26#39;t have plans to go to the zoo or sea world. So, any other recommendations will be more than welcome.

Thank you for any feed back,

    Esther

SD in two days! need tips and recs, please!!

sushi Ota gets fabulous reviews(haven%26#39;t been there) they say it%26#39;s not fancy but very authentic and delicious. Lots of Japanese people like it.Check out signonsandiego.com Will you have a car? More later

SD in two days! need tips and recs, please!!

    Hi riffsmom,

Yes, we will have a car and don%26#39;t mind using it to go to restaurants or places...

    Thanks for your answer.

OK more info Try hikebikekayak.com I didn%26#39;t know you could do whale watching from a kayak. thanks for teaching me something new. The weather has been extra mild(no blizzard like you guys) It%26#39;s been in the mid 70s. Of course tomorrow they say it%26#39;s going back down to the 60s. We%26#39;ve had some pretty big waves too but last week was the full moon so this week should be better. Fun breakfast at Hash House A-go-go. Beautiful restaurant inBalboa Park called The Prado also new musical-before Broadway in The Old Globe(in balboa Park) Twyla Tharp with music by Bob Dylan.(like the one she did with Billy Joel) Extraordinary Deserts-another restaurant and try cohnrestaurants.com for a few more interesting ones where you can read menus. We are ex-NYkers and we%26#39;re having guests this weekend too. Have fun!!!

  • $100 a night hotel

    Hi

I am looking for something around $100 a night for Comic-Con in July. I am not planing on renting a car so I need to be close to Comic-Con.

    Thanks :)

    $100 a night hotel

Try the Super 8 Bayview www.super8sdbay.com

They have a free shuttle from the airport and they advertise a free shuttle to the convention center where comicon is located.

    $100 a night hotel

The Super 8 in Little Italy is a great suggestion. If that if full, try the Penione, also in Little Italy. You can also take the trolley (light rail) from just a couple blocks from either hotel to the Convention Center - or walk, it%26#39;s only about a mile.

    Pensione - sorry www.littleitalysd.com

Marina Inn %26amp; Suites in Little Italy. Rates are as low as $49.95. I was here for Comic-Con 2003. Great location and price. Check recent reviews, please.

Is anything happening in San Francisco to celebrate Carnival/Mardi Gras? I arrive on Thursday and would love to find a celebration to attend.

    Carnival/Mardi Gras in SF?

Hey we are going to be there too. We are from South Louisiana and would love to find some kind of Mardi Gras celebration. We are bringing beads!!!!

    Carnival/Mardi Gras in SF?

This has already been posted --use the search function to see what has already been said or perhaps check out sfgate.com or sfweekly.

Mardi Gras really isn%26#39;t big here. Our ';Mardi Gras'; would be gay pride week in June or Halloween.

Any Mardi Gras celebration you manage to find with be nothing like the celebrations in Louisiana.

There are Mardis Gras and Carnaval events, ussually in clubs with a lineup of music, and for the former, some obligatory bead throwing.

If you%26#39;re from Louisiana, I just have the feeling the events will be faint reminders of Mardis Gras.

The organizers of Carnaval, who used to wait until the warmer month of May to celebrate a delayed celebration, recently started moving it up, and into a different event. So Roccapulco nightclub in the Mission District is the site of one celebration:

    www.carnavalsf.com/index.php…

There%26#39;s another event on Feb. 28 at the Great American Music Hall. Read it and see if it%26#39;s your idea of a Mardis Gras celebration:

    www.sfstation.com/event.php?eventId=15992

NO- nothing going on in SF for Mardi Gras to speak of. COme back on Halloween and go to the Castro. That is our Mardi Gras...

  • First trip to San Francisco

I will be going to San Francisco the first week in April. I will be accompanying my husband on a business trip but I will be alone in San Francisco for two days while he travels nearby. Have never been there before and was wondering if someone could give me some advice on what I should visit. Was looking up tours. Considering going on the GrayLine tour. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Staying in the Radisson Miyako Hotel on Post Street. Anyone have any info on that hotel. Thanks in advance for all your help.

    First trip to San Francisco

You%26#39;re outside the Union Square and Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf area, but it%26#39;s a pleasant location and you should get a nice feel for the Japantown /Fillmore neighborhood.

Connected to your hotel is one of the two buildings of the Japantown Center, a property that was built during the 1960s Redevelopment era. Inside there are restaurants, bars, some great little shops that are mom-and-pop operations. Outside you%26#39;ll find more.

The Radisson Miyako is a fine hotel done with a Japanese aesthetic. Some conferences meet in the meeting rooms on the bottom level, which is probably where your husband is headed.

As for tours, we%26#39;d suggest you do a search using that for a keyword. There%26#39;s been some discussion on tours, and there are all kinds, not just Grayline.

For sites to visit, try doing a search for ';One Thing'; that ABUCKEYE posted. There are many ideas. Lastly, I think a couple of people recently have solicited ideas for what to do for two days. There have been some answers that I think will interest you.

    First trip to San Francisco

Oops, sorry I remembered incorrectly. No conference, I see.

Thank you BetterthanBings. After posting I researched this site and found a wealth of information from other posters. Thank you for you input. I have one question though. I have decided to go on the San Francisco 5 hour shuttle tour. Want to try to go when my husband would be available but don%26#39;t know when that will be. I see that a lot of posters book online before coming to San Francisco. Could you tell me if I would be able to book this shuttle tour after I arrive and am sure of the day that we both are available or will the tour be ';sold out';. Any info that you might be able to provide would be much appreciated.

    San Francisco in October

My wife and I will be coming to SF in October for 3 days we are panning on staying at the Argonaut Hotel at Fishermans Wharf . Can anyone give us any help on reasonably priced resturants for breakfast as well as lunch and dinner.

    San Francisco in October

Mama%26#39;s in North Beach is great for breakfast.

Rotunda at Neiman Marcus is a good lunch spot.

    San Francisco in October

Have a look at Pats Cafe on Taylor close to Columbus____Good breakfast.

    Also Buena Vista Cafe

    www.thebuenavista.com

Both very close to your hotel.

Oooh, It should be great weather in October, Indian summer and all.

It depends what you want for breakfast...If you want a quick standard breakfast, then Lori%26#39;s diner at Ghiradelli square will suffice, Or you can do Irish breakfast at the Fiddlers Green pub on Columbus st. (Although being that you are from the UK, I don%26#39;t suppose that will work for you) In your hotel is the Blue Mermaid. Kinda of touristy priced, but nonetheless, good food, Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner and they have patio seating...

    Have fun.

I think you%26#39;d really enjoy going to the Beach Chalet on the outskirts of Golden Gate Park, right across from the ocean. It%26#39;s a great 1920%26#39;s era bldg. that houses 2 restaurants: the Beach Chalet (inc. a brew pub and ocean views) and the Park Chalet (downstairs). The bldg. contains beautiful, historical murals, a ';visitors center'; and there is live music at nite. Good food at reasonable prices, fun atmosphere and the restaurants are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Check for exact hrs. as these may change depending upon the season. hi, i%26#39;m looking for cheap but good accomodations near the university of california at irvine, right now i have a reservation at the crown plaza for 109/night including breakfast and transporation to and from campus. i%26#39;m thinking about the travelodge but no nothing about it. is there any other accomodations others can suggest? should i just stick to the crown plaza? thanks!

student accomodations in irvine please give advice

It%26#39;s looks like you are not renting a car for your week%26#39;s stay in Irvine. If that is the situation, then I would stick to the Crowne Plaza since it offers transportation. The Travel Lodge Irvine is further away from UCI. UCI is located in a suburban area with not much around it except for some homes, apts and some small shopping centers.

The area is best served by auto even though there is a bus system but requires long commute times.

    Cheers!!

student accomodations in irvine please give advice

There are quite a few hotels on jamboree and main st. The cheapest one would be the marriott courtyard on the corner of jamboree and main. those are within 2-3 miles from uci. Not sure about the shuttle service to the campus though.

Best time and day to go to Dottie's True Blue Cafe for...

want to know when is best time and day to go to breakfast at Dottie%26#39;s True Blue Cafe...also what does anybody recommend to order

Best time and day to go to Dottie's True Blue Cafe for...

I%26#39;ve usually gone on 10ish on the weekdays, and the wait isn%26#39;t too bad. Maybe 1 or 2 parties in front of you.

Best time and day to go to Dottie's True Blue Cafe for...

where is Dottie%26#39;s True Blue located?? looking for different bkfst places on first visit to S.F. I%26#39;m staying down near the Wharf. Also, is it best to buy a ';Muni pass'; as noted on other sites to use on all modes of transport in the city???

522 Jones St. is the address.

As far as the Muni pass goes, it%26#39;s great if you ride the cable cars a lot. The cable car costs $5/per person every time you get on and that can add up quickly and there are no transfers. The Muni street cars are $1.50 so it isn%26#39;t as costly.

The Muni pass is only good on the Muni cars. BART is a completely different system so you would have to buy seperate passes for that.

For more info see www.sfmuni.com and www.bart.gov

when we were there in December we twice tried to eat here and when we got there around 9.30 there was quite a queue...maybe 4/5 tables worth of people in front, and as was throwing it down both days we didnt botehr waiting - so not sure how long we would have had to wait.

we headed up to Cafe Bean, a couple of blocks north, which was also good - probaly the best coffee i%26#39;ve ever had there too!!

  • Vist during Easter 4/06

Hi everyone I would like to know if San Diego is crowded during Easter? We will be staying at the Holiday Inn on the Bay with our eight year old daughter. Our dates are 4/12/06-4/18. Is San Diego a Spring Break destination? We are hoping that its not to rowdy. I have been to San Diego a couple of time but not in April what%26#39;s the weather like? How should we pack?

Thanks to all this is the best travel forum!!!

    Vist during Easter 4/06

Hi Phila fan! I don%26#39;t think it will be too rowdy here for you. There are always places to go to get away from any ';partiers'; that might be bothering you- Balboa Park would be one of my suggestions. As for the weather, barring any weird flukes, Id say mid 70s during the day, maybe need a light jacket in the mornings and once the sun goes down. Enjoy your stay!

    Vist during Easter 4/06

Great location! Holiday Inn on the Bay is right downtown across the street from San Diego Bay. www.thebigbay.com

The spring break partiers are usually in the Mission Bay/Pacific Beach area, quite a ways from where you%26#39;re staying.

You won%26#39;t be in a rowdy area at all, a nice centrally located hotel near the vibrant Little Italy area of San Diego www.littleitalysd.com

From your location, you can stroll along the Embarcaradero, shop at Seaport Village, take a trolley to Old Town, take a short drive to Balboa Park and the zoo, or take a ferry over to Coronado and visit the beautiful, much quieter beaches there. A great location - have a wonderful trip!

    Restaurants for teenagers...

I posted a while ago on here for hotel suggestions. Now I was hoping someone could point me to the direction of some good, relatively inexpensive restaurants that my two teenage daughters might enjoy. They are not into seafood so that is out. They do like Mexican. We will be staying at The Old Town Inn. Addresses of the restaurants would be great also because I plan on doing a Mapquest search before we arrive. We will have a car. Any recommendations are appreciated.

    Restaurants for teenagers...

Well, if your girls like Mexican, you%26#39;re in luck. Because their are tons of choices just a hop, skip and a jump away. Old Town Mexican Cafe is a lively place, which gets very busy, and has a festive, family atmosphere. The food is pretty good too.

    Old Town Mexican Cafe

    2489 San Diego Ave

    San Diego, CA 92110

    Tel: (619) 297-4330

    http://www.oldtownmexcafe.com/

I also really like Casa Guadalajara, which is just on the outskirts of old town, but maybe the best mexican food place in the area:

    Casa Guadalajara

4105 Taylor St., San Diego, CA 92110

    (619) 295-5111

If this isn%26#39;t enough, there is a place called Rockin Baja Lobster which your girls may enjoy. It%26#39;s a fun place, and the food is pretty good.

    Rockin Baja Lobster

    3890 Twiggs St

    San Diego, CA 92110

    619-260-0305

Finally, kids seem to LOVE the Corvette Diner. It%26#39;s a 50%26#39;s themed diner. The food is hot, the portions are hearty and the waitresses in poodle skirts and bouffant hairdos have lots of sass.

    Restaurants for teenagers...

    The Corvette Diner

    3946 Fifth Avenue

    San Diego, CA 92103

    Tel: (619) 542-1476

    http://www.corvettediner.signonsandiego.com/

Many people seem to like the Cheesecake Factory at7067 Friars rd. Also the Corvette Diner is a 50s style fun place hamburgers milk shakes juke boxes etc.at3946 Fifth Ave. I think if you drive into our Old Town area(your motel is outside this area despite its name) and walk around you will have fun watching people make tortillas and reading menus_Old Town Ave. There is another fun place if they like arcade/video games. It%26#39;s called Dave%26amp; Busters. The food is varied American standards-sandwiches, salads etc. but they also have a whole separate area for lots of games including virtual driving , etc. Even my adult friends have fun there.-2931 Camino Del Rio North.

In terms of mexican food your in luck. If you are interested in decent food with great atmosphere than I would say go to Old Town Mexican cafe. Very loud and extremely crowded but a ton of fun. If you are looking for the best mexican food then I would go down a few blocks to Casa de Guadalajara. Better food and much more quiet. Finaly, your daughters would love the boardwalk at Mission Beach. It is about 5 miles from where you are staying and something that should definitely be appreciated. Also, if you are hungry their is a very affordable beachfront restaurant called World Famous that is a very popular among locals and tourists. Enjoy!

Thanks for all the great tips. I know we are going to have a wonderful time visiting San Diego for our spring break.:)

    Disneyland Feb 20th or 21st, 2006?

Which day might have the smallest crowds? Keep in mind, Feb 20th is the Presidents Day holiday. Feb 22nd is also an option, if needed.

Also, how feasible is it to cover DL and Calif Adv on the same weekday?

    Thanks y%26#39;all.

    Disneyland Feb 20th or 21st, 2006?

I think you answered your own question - but the holiday will be busiest. As you go through the week, February 22 will most likely be least busy. Given that we%26#39;ve had a mild winter this year and its winter break for many schools - DL and Calif Adv will be popular place to go to. In terms of seeing everything at DL and Calif Adv not really - even on the best of days. It usually takes 2-3 days depending on number of people at the park to see most (not all) of the attractions.

    Disneyland Feb 20th or 21st, 2006?

The benefit of going on the 20th, you will be able to see the highly rated 50th fireworks show and Fantasmio!, two things that will not be offered Thusday thru Thursday.

Yes, it will be busy, so much so, that Disney is keeping the park open until Midnight on Monday.

Though, with many kids needing to go to school on Tuesday (though not all, some schools do get the week off (I think some Arizona schools are part of this extended holiday), the later hours will be lighter than during the day.

If you can only spend one day at Disneyland, just get a ticket to Disneyland, and don%26#39;t spend the extra $20 to get a ParkHopper. There is more than enough to see and do in one day.

If you are there for multiple days, then get a ParkHopper and check out both parks.

Place to stay between San Jose and San Deigo

Because we are travelling with little ones, we wanted to break up our trip. We were thinking of staying in Pismo Beach one way but wanted to stay somewhere else on the way back. We considered Santa Barbara, but this is August and we didn%26#39;t want to break the bank on a hotel for one night. What do you think?

Place to stay between San Jose and San Deigo

What we like to do is take the coastal route one way and then come back the faster route (I-5) when returning. We like to stay at Harris Ranch if we want to break up the drive from Los Angeles to San Jose. Harris Ranch has a really large pool (great to swim in for the family); an excellent steak house; store; etc. We leave mid afternoon get there about 7:00 and have a nice evening of it.

    http://www.harrisranch.com/

If you decide to do the coastal route on the way back; I%26#39;d stay in San Luis Obispo at the Embassy Suites or better yet, try to find a place in MOrro Bay at one of the motels there.

Place to stay between San Jose and San Deigo

Thanks for the advice I will look into both Morro Bay and Harris Ranch.

  • Lemon Tree Hotel & Holiday Inn Express?

Doing lots of research towards a family trip to Disneyland. In my quest for hotel info and the best prices I have run across two hotels that I haven%26#39;t seen mentioned on this site. Does anyone know anything about the Lemon Tree or Holiday Inn Express? Are they good hotels? Are they to be avoided? What are your experiences? Any and all info is greatly appreciated.

Lemon Tree Hotel is ranked 5th out of 98 hotels right here at TripAdvisor, just go to the Hotel section here.

Holiday Inn Express is ranked 6th.

Sounds like they are both worth staying at, but I still think you should go read some of the reviews and see for yourself.

Hi, I am trying to organise a trip to west coats USA from London, but cannot ecide whether its best to try and book flights London-LA-San Fransisco-Vegas-London (seems very difficult to get direct flights from SF to Vegas, and Vegas home), to do a flydive from LA, but I%26#39;m a little nervous of driving in the US, or to do a coach trip (think it may be full of older people, and perhaps restrictive on free time). Or finally to fly to LA, and then use Amtrak to get up the west coast, but only problem is Amtrak does not travel to Vegas. Please can you share your experiences of different methods, if you have planned a similar trip. Many thanks!

    best method

So -- you want to visit LA, San Fransisco and Vegas? How much time do you have?

How about flying London to LA, then LA to Vegas, then Vegas to San Fransisco, and home to London from SF?

The flights between LA and Las Vegas are quite inexpensive, as are the flights between LA and San Fransisco -

    best method

There are direct flights from Las Vegas to San Francisco,

however most of us locals tend to fly Las Vegas to Oakland or Las Vegas to San Jose due to its less expensive to fly into one of those two airports. If you purchase early enough, you can get a seat on Southwest for abougt $90.00 one way. Oakland by the way is the airport closer to San Francisco; there is shuttle service and BART - bay area rapid transit/shuttle bus - that can take you from Oakland to San Francisco.

(Agree with Yogachik its cheaper to fly from Burbank to Las Vegas and back....)

Depending upon how much time you have and if it is summer/early fall, a popular route for fly/drive is as follows:

    Fly into LAX

Drive from LA to Las Vegas

Drive from Las Vegas to Death Valley

Drive from Death Valley to Mammoth Lakes/June Lakes

Drive from Mammoth Lakes/June Lakes to Yosemite

Drive from Yosemite National Park to San Francisco

Drive from San Francisco to Monterey

Drive from Monterey to Cambria (see Hearst Castle and on drive down see Big Sur Area).

Drive from Cambria to Santa Barbara (for Lunch)

    Return to LAX

The key thing is timing as it depends upon if Tioga Pass is open between Highway 395 and Yosemite National Park. If it is, its easy. If not, the routing can get complex and add many 8-10 hours to the

    trip.

There are several posts on here from people from London who have made the drive and find it fine. Of course, the distance and curvy roads from Monterey to Cambria are the most difficult. (Note: You can take Highway 101 in that case instead of Highway 1. But take note: When I mention this to anyone from Englad - they always say - the drive and ocean views are well worth it...and highly recommend the Highway 1 drive.)

    1. How many days is your holiday?

    2. What kinds of things interest you in the various cities (natural beauty, museums, amusement parks, architecture) ?

    3. How much of a gambler are you?

    4. How much do you like to drive? The drive straight down the coast between SF and LA is about 7-1/2 hours without sightseeing (except looking out the window at the ocean as you drive). Would such a drive be enjoyable or would you want to break it into 2 or 3 pieces?

    5. How important is saving money? Round-trip international flights are less expensive than multi-segment (in this case, arriving into one U.S. and departing from another).
