the gaslamp is good for night life (clubs) and restaurants. Not really to stay there .... depending on your financial situation, try seaport village (not a long cab ride from airport if you don%26#39;t have a rental car). Possibly you could get a rental car at the last minute at the airport when someone happens to cancel. If so, then explore la jolla, mission bay, mission beach (explore higher rated hotels), del mar (may be pricey), or go up the coast to carlsbad, encinitas. The Zoo and Seaworld are closest to seaport village, mission bay, mission beach, and la jolla (sort of). Maybe on the seaworld site there are suggestions for lodging. Also check the san diego visitors bureau (google it). San Diego is gorgeous.

thank you for the advice. any suggestions of nice accommodation in these areas?

I have recently returned from San Diego and absolutely loved it, you%26#39;re going to have a great time. If you are planning to do what you say, I would strongly suggest hiring a car for the 3 days you are in San Diego. San Diego is the 7th largest city in the US with many of the areas you are looking at visiting a fair distance from each other. Hiring a car would be much cheaper than getting taxis to and from all those locations. We stayed on Coronado which was a real gem - very relaxing with loads of restuarants in walking distance from the hotels. We stayed at the Marriott Coronado which was great but pricey - $255 package per night but came with free huge breakfast, free parking, free water taxi to downtown for shops and gaslamp area, and a third off other restaurant meals in the hotel. Both Seaworld and athe Zoo really are excellent and well worth visiting.
