I am looking for affordable beachfront hotel/motel in the San Diego area and found good rates at the Seacoast Inn in Imperial Beach, just south of SD. Every review I%26#39;ve read online describes IB as a quaint little beachfront town. Several people said they visit IB every year for vacation.
The problem is that a friend who just moved from San Diego a few months ago said IB is crime-ridden and the corners are filled w/ crack dealers. I just can%26#39;t reconcile these two stories.
Can anyone who lives/lived or visited there recently (last 12 months) give me a realisitc idea of this town? Can you explain why some describe it as an idyllic beachfront community and others say it%26#39;s the inner city on the shore?
Thank you....
Is Imperial Beach safe?
wow, i%26#39;ve lived in imperial beach for 7 years and i have never seen a crack dealer. i hate the bad rep my cute little hometowns gets. maybe about 10 or 15 years ago the crime was a problem, but not so anymore. The city has really cleaned up/done a lot of rennovation over the past few years. the closer you are to the beach, the cuter it gets. some areas are a little run down as you go inland, but we don%26#39;t have any crime or gang problems here. it%26#39;s a lovely beach community without the ritzy snobbish attitude that some of the more affluent communities have. it%26#39;s really a great place! (and its pretty cheap when compared with the other areas of san diego)

IB is a great place to live. Or visit! I have been here in IB for 2 years and I would never want to move anywhere else. The locals are the greatest and most friendly people I%26#39;ve ever come across. You really feel at home here. The bad rap has cursed our little beach town. Long ago it was full of crime and drugs but that was 15-20 years ago. I remember because I lived in San Diego at that time. IB is a gem of a town!
Every were you go there is crime. As you walk down IB blvd. or Palm Ave you are not going to see any crime in the street. I lived in Imperial Beach for 27 years, left for 9 yrs and I am back living safely. My children are in their late teens and love it here.
I love Imperial Beach and will certainly go there again and again. There was never a time that I was there that I have felt unsafe or seen any illegal or illicet activity. The quaint little beach town description fits. It is awesome there and more affordable than other ocean front towns to stay in, not to mention being minutes away from Coronado and San Diego itself. I HIGHLY reccomend Imperial Beach!
Safe as any place else you might be considering. It%26#39;s a little far to get to the tourist stuff in San Diego with the serious traffic, but I think it%26#39;s a cool little place to visit. Bring your own food, though. The restaurants are few and not stellar.
