Which airline is better - Virgin or United??

My husband and I belong to the frequent flyer programme of bmi (belong to the Star Alliance) and can get 2 free return flights in October from London to Los Angeles on our points. the choice of airlines which have the availability is either Virgin or United. We have flown on a couple of occasions on Virgin (can%26#39;t fault them - always excellent service) but never on United. Which one is better e.g. seats, service, in-flight entertainment? Your honest reply is very much appreciated.

When flying internationally, I think you should fly on your native airline, Virgin, which has an excellent reputation. United is a good airline, but has had some financial problems since 9/11.

Can%26#39;t fault Virgin either, but prefer United - sorry to seem unpatriotic, just seems more room in economy.

If you can get seats in the Economy Plus section on United, it is much more comfortable. I think the entertainment option are probably better on Virgin. Kind of a toss-up.

We travelled with Virgin 2 years ago to Anaheim fron Uk and have just returned from LA with United. There did appear to be more leg room on the United flights but the entertainment on the Virgin was better. One other small point that I enjoyed was that you can listen to real time air traffic control for the whole time the plane is in the air. I believe that United are the only airline to do this. The food that we just experienced on United was ghastly. In fact it was the worst inflight food we have had. Why do airlines persist in supplying this muck. Reduce the airfare and provide the option of sandwiches to purchase if required. Lastly the Virgin crew are much nicer to look at than the United who do not have a uniform uniform.

We have now redeemed our miles and are sticking to Virgin. But thanks again guys for your help.
