Best hike

Looking for suggestion for the best Yosemite hikes. My husband and I will be spending six days there the second week of Sept.

We are planning to hike Half Dome, but would like suggestion on other must do hikes.

Best hike

Check the Yosemite website. There has been some work being done on the Half Dome trail. It%26#39;s been shut down 8am-5pm or so Mondays through Thursdays. Work complete yet?

My favorite hike in Yosemite is to go from Tioga Pass (8000? ft), go up to Cloud%26#39;s Rest 9926 ft altitude and get back. Maybe 10 miles roundtrip.

Cathedral Peak (10,940 ft) or the Grand Canyon of the Tuolomne are also wonderful.

Actually my favorite hike...I actually don%26#39;t recommend...I certainly wouldn%26#39;t do it again because I%26#39;m surprised how stupid I am and that I didn%26#39;t die. It%26#39;s a ~20 mile butt-kicker that makes Half Dome look like a cake walk. Take the El Capitan trail (???) from the base of El Capitan (4000 ft). Head west and across a precipitous rock (truck sized boulders) slide that%26#39;s deadly dangerous. This trail is actually still on the maps except the rockslide portion is a dashed, non-solid line for some reason... You%26#39;ll have to do some bouldering on big boulders that teeter with every movement. To go around this, you%26#39;ll have to climb up El Capitan vertically. Survive the rockslide and hook around eastward onto what%26#39;s certainly the El Capitan trail just above the Cascades. You%26#39;ll be ascending to the top of El Capitan (7569 ft). Continue eastward along the El Capitan trail to Yosemite Creek. You will now follow the Yosemite Falls trail back down to the valley next to Yosemite Falls. Bring lots of water or a water filter to refill the water bottles.

Best hike

A favorite hike of many people is the hike to Vernal Falls. the trail head is at Happy Isle.

Another great hike is to get a bus shuttle from the Valley to Glacier Point and hike the Panorama Trail along the south rim down to Illouette Creek and all the way to the top of Nevada Falls and then down the trail to Vernal Fallls and the Mist Trail to Happy Islaes in the Valley. Expansive views of the high country to north and east boundaries of the park.

I agree with previous post that the hikes around Tuolumne Meadows are amazing. One favorite, though quite steep, is from Tuolumne Meadows to Cathedral Lakes, especially the upper lake because you can ';walk'; up the granite slopes and get stunning views of the north and east peaks. 3 - 4 miles I seem to recall.

Acclimate to the elevation in your first few days and then do the hikes at higher elevations at the end of your stay. Stay hydrated and do watch the afternoon weather as cumulus cloud build up over the peaks is often a sign of afternoon thunder storms because of hot humid air being sucked up from Mexico. By mid September, this will probably be less common than in August, but stay vigilant and also check with Visitors%26#39; Centers and back country permit stations even if you are only doing day hikes. Lots of info:on the park official website including the backcountry trail guide updated at the start of every month.

I was there last week and Half Dome was open weekends only. My favorite is Panorama, but it does duplicate some of the Half Dome return tip.
