We are travelling from Australia to US mid Sept. In San Fran for 3 days only late Sept. Travelling with 6 year old boy and 8 year old girl... staying in Fishermans Wharf. Any ideas or hot tips welcome......
Day 1 Thurs: Arrive from New York at 10am. Taxi? to hotel
Day 2: Fri .Day ??? / Have booked evening tour of Alcatraz at 5.10pm
Day 3 Sat: Have car this day..would love to do Muir Woods, Sausalito (maybe lunch) and Tiburon. Need to be back at airport by around 8pm....
Or should we do Sausalito by ferry on Thurs or Fri?? and go somewhere else Saturday? We love mueums but might have overloaded in New York. Would just like to take it easy, love to wander around. When should we fit in Golden Gate park and a bit of shopping (not touristy stuff) We%26#39;ve been to SF before without kids but have never done ';the sights'; . Does the cable car go near Lombard, or should we walk it? or drive ?

The Hyde St. cable car goes right past Lombard, so you can get off and walk down it. Your kids will love having a sundae at Ghirardelli Square, and they may also like all the children%26#39;s activities at Yerba Buena Gardens. Near there on Mission is a Mel%26#39;s Diner if you wnat to give them an old fashioned all-American diner tyoe experience.

We went in June, 2 families, kids ages 3 (girl),5,7 %26amp; 8 (boys). Highlights that they loved from the trip that they all keep talking about:
Cable Car %26amp; f-line trolley rides
Chinatown, Cable Car Barn, Fortune Cookie factory, Dim Sum
Ghiradelli Sundeas
Fire Truck Tour
You%26#39;ll have a wonderufl time.
I would second Juxie on the Fire truck tour - your kids (and yourselves) will love it. It actually takes you into Sausalito so if you do it on your first full day you get a flavour of the place and can decide whether to go back. Whilst the town is very pretty and would appeal to grown-ups there%26#39;s not much there for kids to do. Muir Woods sounds like a good idea and maybe since you%26#39;re heading back that way then Sausalito for lunch would be nice. However, whilst you%26#39;re in the car I would head over to Lombard Street and drive down it - I think the kids would really enjoy that. They will also love watching the seal lions and the street entertainers at Pier 39, which is just a short walk from Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf.
What type of shopping do you want?
I love the Basic Brown Bear factory. The main one is a little out of the way in Potrero past The Mission, a 22 bus goes down there near Lombard Street on Fillmore, but a few blocks from the cable car. There is also a branch in Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf. You get to see how a teddy bear%26#39;s insides are put in and you can do some of it yourself. I%26#39;m sort of grown up but I%26#39;ve seen kids of all ages there, once 3 generations, and grandpa got a grandpa bear.
Luci
elkiedee, if you are taking the 22 Fillmore from Lombard to Potrero hill and the bear factory, you are an adventurous sole.
Re Shopping...mainly clothes: we like Gap for the kids - are there others you%26#39;d suggest - perhaps less conservative? Shoes ? Kids and adults.. thanks for your reply.
Dear Nibbles, do you stop in Sausalito on the Fire Truck Tour or just drive through?
Definitely do lunch or dinner at the RainForest Cafe on the Wharf. I%26#39;m told it%26#39;s one of the best one in the country. If you haven%26#39;t been to one yet it is a jungle inside complete with robotic animals and such. The kids will love it.
The Hyde Powell line Cable Car stops at the top of %26#39;The Crookedest Street%26#39; if that is the part of Lombard you%26#39;re referring to.

The Fire Truck tour just drives through Sausilito. The only actual stop on the tour is when you get out and have your picture taken with the fire truck and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.
There is a lot of shopping around Union Square. Take the f-line trolley or the Cable Car there.
Juxie answered your question on the Fire Truck tour. If you feel you can squeeze in another museum the Exploratorium is fantasic and your kids would love it. It%26#39;s all hands on and very relaxed. The playground in Golden Gate Park would also appeal to the kids. It%26#39;s a very straightforward route by bus from the Wharf to the Exploratorium (the local experts will know the bus route). You could fit in the GG park on the way back from Muir Woods.
