Snow chains

Hello

I am planning to drive from Las Vegas to Lake Tahoe via Death Valley/Bishop etc in early May next year. Am I likely to need to carry (and use) snow chains for this journey? I will be in a hire car but i understand rental car companies don%26#39;t allow you to use chains.

Cheers

Snow chains

In early May you will not need chains.

However, some of the roads (especially in the Yosemite National Park area) won%26#39;t yet be open due to snow pack.

It tends to be an %26#39;all of one and none of the other%26#39; type situation. The roads that are open to travel will be fine and clear during that time of year.

Just one other thing, speaking from experience, the roads through the Sierra Nevada range are twisty, curvy things. The miles don%26#39;t go as quickly as they look like they would on a map.

Hope your trip goes well!

No chains. We do the LA-Carson City run on Hwy 395 several times a year, and it is a fairly easy drive. Death Valley to Lone Pine is two lane, a bit winding, but no traffic. Lone Pine to Bishop and nearly all the way to Lee Vining is mostly 4 lane, divided highway. There are a few towns you go through, and only occasional two lane with passing lanes.

Beyond Lee Vining to Lake Tahoe, it will be mostly two lanes with passing lanes. The roads are excellent, and well-maintained. The only slow area may be along the Walker River, and then from the town of Walker CA to Topaz Lake - that%26#39;s two lane, very little passing, a few curves, and slow cars. Not really a problem, though.

Thanks for your advice guys, that makes me a feel a little easier about doing the trip!

Cheers
