Tahoe travel with kids

Thinking of including Tahoe in our travel itinerary. Making our journey from Monterey, and departing SFO. Can anyone advice on the journey? We%26#39;ll be traveling with a one year old and five year old kids. Also, where should we stay, North or South?

Can you give more information? When will you be traveling? How much time will you have? From Monterey to Tahoe, it%26#39;s about a 6-hour drive and then probably about 4 hours back to San Francisco. I prefer the North Shore because it%26#39;s less touristy and quieter and there are no casinos. We used to stay in a condo in Carnelian Bay and had a pool, easy access to the lake, a miniature golf course nearby and a lot of paths for walks. It%26#39;s also a short drive into Tahoe City for restaurants and shopping. Some people prefer the South Shore, though, because there are more activities.

Hi PGdenizen, thanks for your reply. Will be traveling in May. Staying a week in Ventura, then a one night stopover at Morro Bay, before proceeding to Monterey for a week. Thinking of extending another week at Tahoe. Most likely will set off early to Tahoe but worried abt the long drive. Where can we stop for a break/lunch? Or should we stay one night somewhere? Our flight home from SFO is at 2pm (does that mean we need to take off at around 7am for journey and airport clearance?). Or should we stay at an airport hotel?

Hi CynTeow,

If you can spend 5 to 7 days for the Tahoe protion, it%26#39;s well worth the drive. If you want to split up the drive, a good place to stop is Sacramento. It%26#39;s almost the midpoint in terms of driving time. Six hours in the car would be hard on your little ones, wouldn%26#39;t it? There is a lot to do in Sacramento (zoo, railroad museum) and plenty of nice hotels. Here%26#39;s a link for things to do in Sacramento:

The place we used to stay at Tahoe is called Carnelian Woods, a complex of townhouses. They are great for families.

Going back to San Francisco, the drive will be shorter, of course--about 4 hrs. You might leave Tahoe the afternoon before your day of departure and stay in a hotel near the SF airport. That would probably be the easiest thing to do. There are plenty of good airport hotels near SFO.

I hope you have a great trip, and please let me know if I can help in any other way. I live in the Monterey area, so if you need hotel, restaurant or activity recommendations, let me know.

PGDenizen, I can%26#39;t thank you enough for your advice! :) Monterey is a charming place; we have been there once but this time we%26#39;re bringing our kids and will be staying longer. Can you comment on Bonfante? Are the rides suitable for infants? Thought of doing Paramount Great America but rides may have height restrictions.

Bonfante Gardens would be the perfect place for your children, but keep in mind that it%26#39;s open only on weekends in May . A few of the rides have height restrictions, but most don%26#39;t. It really is a great place for younger children. Great America, I think, wouldn%26#39;t offer enough for your kids because of their age, but perhaps someone else on this forum would know more about that than I do. They both have websites, so you can check the details. If you want to do any shopping while you%26#39;re here, you can combine a trip to Bonfante with a visit to the Gilroy Premium Outlets. It%26#39;s an enormous outlet center just a few miles from Bonfante.
