Where to stay on Highway101 and 1

My wife and I need somewhere to stay on the way from Grand Canyon to Monterrey. Somewhere on H101, as we%26#39;ll be travelling that route.

We want to get to Monterrey early the next day. We will then be travelling down H1 for 3 days on the way to LA hoping to visit Hearst Castle. We%26#39;re also considering Santa Barbara before we reach LA.

Any advice on places / hotels to stay would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Are you arriving at SFO? Its about a 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive from SFO International Airport to Monterey along Highway 101.

Since it sounds like you don%26#39;t want to drive the entire way to Monterey, I%26#39;d recommend either Sheraton Gateway by the airport, or Hotel Valencia in San Jose (Santana Row)

Santana Row is a great place to start a vacation with shops, restaurants, bars, night life, and even Winchester Mystery House tourist attractoin across the street. Its not directly on 1 or 101, but its easy to get to from there.

If you do want to drive the entire way to Monterey, then you could stay there, perhaps Best Western Monterey Inn if want a more inexpensive place; Green Gables Inn for bed and breakfast, or if you want a top notch place stay at Inn at Spanish Bay.

When you leave Monterey, stop by Pt. Lobos (wonderful state reserve park) http://pt-lobos.parks.state.ca.us/ and then take one of the most beautiful trips along the coast from Carmel to San Simeon/Cambria. Be sure to see the elephant seals before you get to Hearst Castle. For Hearst Castle, best places to stay is either Moonstone Beach (perhaps Best Western Firestone Inn) or stay further south at Morro Bay.

From Cambria to Santa Barbara, then stay at Santa Barbara. There is a range of lodging such as Bacara at the top end to Best Western Pepper Tree Inn in the medium range.

If you need a place by Heast Castle try the the Best Western Cavalier Resort http://www.cavalierresort.com/. My family always stays here for a coastal getaway. It%26#39;s located in San Simeon just minutes from the Castle and it%26#39;s a great place. We get an ocean view room. They have a fireplace and mini kitchen. Robes and binoculars are also provided. At dusk they light bonfires along the cliff overlooking the ocean, and the pool is heated so swimming is year round.

Thank you both for the advice.

Definitely at least visit Santa Barbara before heading to LA! It%26#39;s beautiful there. If you can spend a night, even better!

I 2nd the Best Western Cavalier Resort, it%26#39;s only a few minutes drive to Hearst Castle and the elephant seals, and very relaxing location as it%26#39;s close to the coastline. I remembered we paid $79/night and stayed for 2 nights, and it was worth it! Other options to stay on the way down to LA, Pismo Beach, Cambria, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo.

Thanks again. We%26#39;re going to travel to San Simeon from Monterrey and then stay at Best Western Cavalier Resort.

Then, after a day at Hearst Castle, we%26#39;re going to carry on and possibly stay somewhere else on the way to Santa Barbara. We%26#39;re definitely staying in Santa Barbara on our last night before heading to LA. Possibly 2 nights in Santa Barbara if we get there earlier.

Please could someone advise if this seems realistic with travelling.

Hey lambyhibs,

It is realistic to go from San Simeon to Santa Barbara. If you want to stay another night at the Central Coast of California, then possibly Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo.

Also, have you gotten tours reserved for Hearst Castle? Sometimes they sell out, so to be safe, reserve your tours online beforehand. There was a time we went to Hearst Castle and all the tours sold out for the day, we were so disappinted.

Depending when your tours are done, you can just drive to Santa Barbara from San Simeon. If not, Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo maybe good choices to stay the night. Have a wonderful time!!!
