San Diego to Knotts Berry and then LA (near airport)

Now that I%26#39;ve got all the lodging in San Diego completed. I need some advice on when we leave. We are flying out of LA to Oahu early on a Wednesday morning. I thought leaving from San Diego that morning would be a big mistake. So we plan on leaving on Tuesday and heading to Knotts Berry Farm. Then after our time there, head to LA area for a quick night at an airport area hotel. We will return our car that night and just take the shuttle bus in the morning for our flight out. Questions are. What route are we taking? What time should we leave Sand Diego to get to Knotts Berry? Would like to get there about 11-12 noon? How long will that take? And then, what route should we take from Knotts Berry to LAX area and what time should be stay away from? Also, any alternate suggestions would be okay if any of you think this plan is dumb. lol

I think that%26#39;s an excellent idea if you have your heart set on Knott%26#39;s Berry Farm. I think if you left around 9:30 a.m. you would make it to Knott%26#39;s at around 11-11:30 a.m. You would take the I-5 freeway from San Diego north into central Orange County then take the 91 freeway west and get off at Beach Blvd. You would make a left (south) at Beach and Knotts will be on your right hand side in a half a mile.

From Knotts I would (in order to avoid traffic) leave no earlier than 6:45 p.m. and take the 91 freeway west to the 605 north. Once you merge onto the 605 north stay in the right hand lanes and watch for the 105 freeway junction. Take the 105 west to the LAX area. If you leave Knotts at 7 p.m., you should arrive at the LAX area by about 7:30-7:35 p.m.

Enjoy your trip!

Thank you very much for that information. Now question. That may be to long in Knotts Berry for us. So, if we left San Diego a little later, say 10:30 or even 11am. Would we still make it there in an hour, hour 1/2 or will that cause traffic problems for us? The 730m into LA area sounds fine though. I%26#39;m guessing that even later would be okay too right?

Yes, if you left later for Knott%26#39;s, that would not hurt you traffic- wise and would probably be somewhat faster. Yes, leaving later from Knotts would also be fine. If you got tired of the amusement park section at Knott%26#39;s there is a very popular and excellent marketplace where you can buy Knott%26#39;s jellies, eat in their famous chicken dinner restaurant (a must for first timers who aren%26#39;t vegetarians--although they may offer a vegetarian dish on the menu), and go to a bakery, among other shops and eateries. You could also visit the Independence Hall replica (ask if it is open before going there) across Beach Blvd. (accessed via a tunnel near the entrance to the main amusement park).

I forgot to mention in my previous posts that if you%26#39;re traveling after Labor Day weekend and pre Memorial Day--in other words not in the summer, Knott%26#39;s usually closes early (6 p.m. or thereabouts). Otherwise it is open late

How would I go from LAX to Knott%26#39;s farm. I am bringing relatives in from Holland and thought I might take them to Knott%26#39;s for the chicken dinner for a treat after the 12 hour trip. Thanks.

I should also mention that the restaurants in the marketplace section of Knotts keep later hours in the off-season than the theme park section however.

You have been so helpful. I so appreciate all this information. Traveling with my 7 year old son with autism so the more options and suggestions I have make things so much easier. This will all be occuring on Tuesday August 23rd. I%26#39;ve checked the Knotts hours and they are open until 10pm so that will be great for us.

Thanks again. :)

ps. would love the chicken restaurant

Hi bakersfieldmom,

To get from LAX to Knotts, You would take the 105 freeway east (toward Norwalk) to it%26#39;s end at the 605 freeway, then take the 605 freeway south a short distance to the 91 freeway east (toward Riverside) and get off at Beach Blvd. Make a right (south) on Beach and in about a half a mile on the right hand side you will see the entrance to Knotts Berry Farm and if you%26#39;re just going to the Chicken Dinner restaurant, park in the section that says California Marketplace parking.

You%26#39;re quite welcome Janinelouie! I hope you and your son enjoy your trip!

P.S. Knotts is very accustomed to having people with special needs visit and so if you told them about your son%26#39;s condition they may have some special suggetions about what attractions there he may especially like or may not like.

great. thank you. :)
