Hi Can anyone out there suggest a Hotel to stay at it is only for 1 night but I would like to be in the ';';heart'; of what to see in LA. Not too expensive but OK..........Thanks

LA is a large place.....its a major city where the ';heart'; of the city is 40 or so miles.....
The ';heart'; of the city also has many different flavors such as:
a) Beach Life (2 major areas here)
Area a: Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, Venice Beach
Area b: Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna
c) Hollywood Life (including Rodeo Drive, Beverley Hills)
c) Anaheim Disney Life
d) Shopping Life (Rodeo Drive, Farmers Market)
e) Club Life (West Hollywood)
There are a variety of other areas also such as Downtown LA,
Malibu, Chinatown, Japantown, Olvera Street, etc.
As such, its hard to know what ';heart'; of the city you would like to stay in. Could you identify from this list which ';area'; you would like to experience, and that would then help to identify the lodging choice.
Thanks so much....hope this helps!

Hi Mini. Thanks. We would onlyhave 1 night in LA before heading to Oceanside. I saw on a Getaway travel program we have here in Oz that there is a train ,like a local service.that travels around different stations in LA so you can travel from one point to another and not need a car. This appeared to be a new service. I was in LA 1991 and I think I would like to stay in the Hollywood, Beverley Hills, Rodeo Drive area. As i hope we can visit Disneyland from Oceanside where I will have 6 days there..Probably doesn%26#39;t make much sense to you. That was what amazed me when I visited LA as you say there is no heart to LA it is soooooooooo big. Not like here we have a Capital City that doesn%26#39;t spread so far......A little smaller......Sorry if I sound a little niave.....Thanks Gera007
Mini, your information is misleading. There are pockets all over LA with great shopping: There%26#39;s Montana Ave in Santa Monica, 3rd St Promenade in Santa Monica, Main Street and Abbot Kinney in Venice, La Brea in Hollywood, Robertson in West Hollywood/Beverly Hills, Melrose in Hollywood, Echo Park has some great boutiques, Sunset Plaza, etc.
So, being central in Los Angeles is all a matter of which neighborhood you%26#39;d like to be based in, ie where do you want to walk to for dinner?
I certainly wouldn%26#39;t call Laguna Beach or even the South Bay (Huntington, Hermosa, Redondo) a part of LA - although a night in Hermosa Beach would be a memorable experience. But it%26#39;s not something to consider with just one night in LA.
Gera - it%26#39;s a matter of picking where you want your one night. You%26#39;re certainly not going to be able to get all of LA in one day, so make a decision - city or beach (and Mini is right in one thing - it%26#39;s a 40 minute car ride from city to beach). You can find a decent hotel in any area.
A couple other things about Mini%26#39;s post: The ';Club'; life is not in West Hollywood, but in Hollywood, for the most part. West Hollywood does have lots of fun clubs, know that it%26#39;s a gay community.
And, if you%26#39;re looking for ';Hollywood'; life, or assume Mini means where the Hollywood community hangs out, there%26#39;s no such area. It%26#39;s Malibu, Santa Monica, Silverlake, Sunset Plaza, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Hollywood... Frankly, I spot more celebrities in the morning at my local coffee shop than I do at dinner.
Thanks. City is the decision..........Rodeo Drive and Beverley Hills..........??? I think it will not be beach weather in January!!! Shopping time!!! and seeing the Hollywood sign and Universal Studios......... Thanks.Gera007
