Hostels in San Diegos

I%26#39;m planning a 4 day trip in Sept. to SD and looking into the hostels as I find hotel rates overpriced. I%26#39;m very over 40 and wondering if a hostel stay is problematic (safety, cleanliness, attitude, etc.). Any comments?

I%26#39;ve never stayed in one, but lots of my friends kids have, and they seem to enjoy it. Hostels tend to cater to the younger crowd, as they%26#39;re more adaptable and don%26#39;t seem to mind sharing bathrooms or sleeping dorm style; I know the hostels are more popular in Europe than here, but I don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s usually an issue with either cleanliness or safety in most places. If you don%26#39;t have a problem with the ';sharing'; issues, I would think that you wouldn%26#39;t have a problem with staying in a hostel. There are a couple here in the Gaslamp area that are well located, just google search San Diego hostels, and they should come right up.
